For those that are interested I've imaged my slides from a climb of Mont Blanc in August of 2000 with my friends Erik, Peter, and Robin. I had these slides scanned for some time with a Nikon CoolScan 5000ED, but didn't like the outcome, so I re-imaged them with my 55/3.5 AIS macro, PB-6 bellows and PS-6 slide holder and D800. The NEF files from the D800 are much easier to deal with than the .tif's from the Nikon scan software.
On the trip I took an F3HP, 20/2.8D, and 50/1.8D and nothing else as I recall. Ah the simple days

I don't know what made me check out FM, but I sure am glad I did.

OMG! You are insane!! BEAUTIFUL photographs, Just beautiful. You are a serious hiker. I am green with envy. We went to Alaska this summer. I did a little hiking in Denali and thought I was special. Nope! You're the man!!

And only an F3. I took every piece of camera equipment I owned.

I wish I could share some of my pics with you, but.... You know. I'm an AF guy now

Thanks, Leighton! Yeah, the Fuji X-Pro or X100/s are much more "pure photography" than the Df. The lack of an oldtime-focusingscreen or some sort of hybrid-finder is truly disappointing. Way too many buttons, dials and so on for a clean retro-look. Sorry, Nikon, it might be a very good camera, but not something I wished for.

All I want is D800 electronics grafted into an F3HP body and viewfinder. I'll even take the manual film advance lever to arm the shutter! From my personal shooting experiences, that's Pure Photography. I know the body will have to be thicker to accomodate the sensor and circuitry behind it, and screen, but leave the controls alone, and leave the MLU. I think I can live with 1/2000 of a second, and even the 1/80 flash sync. Maybe brave enough to even skip the display screen. I wonder how long a battery the size of a film canister would last driving an FX sensor + electronics. Sacrificing G lens compatibility, maybe.

Enough gear talk here.... I need to find another MF shot to post, maybe this evening. Or more importantly, get and and shoot with the great MF Nikkors. Think of all the MF lenses you can now buy with the $2800 you saved on the Df Leighton!

Good eye Georg. I post processed the image to blur everything except the central flower. The white flowers were just too much of a distraction to the composition. I also was looking for that dreamy bokeh of the 135 f2 that Ronny uses to such great effect.

Weasel, I've managed to exchange the D700's focusing screen with one from an old and defective

James, I'm a bit surprised that your beautiful flower-shot doesn't show the 35/1.4's typical signature.

I'm totally flabbergasted by all the great shots on the last few pages. This time I just want to add my two cents to the Nikkor 35/1.4 bokeh studies.

Petur, great stuff with the wonderful 35/1.4! The bench-shot really shows the 35/1.4's jittery bokeh. The portrait is very nice.

The Karoo ("Place of Great Thirst" in the Khoi - San language) occupies a lot of South Africa';s interior and is famed for its Karoo lamb. Typically small communities sprang up about 60 miles apart to service the needs of the farmers. Today with motor cars many have become oddities with small communities of descendants of the Khoi and San people who lived there for centuries.

Uniondale is such a community - very depressed economically and with little reason for its existence. In previous centuries traders set up businesses and there was always a local doctor along with various ministers of religion. The houses they built were designed to cope with extremes - hot summers and very cols winters.

Here are a couple of landscapes of such houses - note the deep shady verandahs or "stoeps" in Afrikaans.

I still have four MF lenses including the 16mm. I'll NEVER sell that one.

I will be using my MF lenses at work tomorrow. I have to take a picture of a tiny tiny thing. I would like sharp detail less than 0.25mm I was going to try using my extension tube with a MF lens....

Monty - Good to see you're still alive.

Petur - Georg is right, that bench DOES show the crazy 35's bokeh, nice shot.

Peter - Thanks for the story. I had to look up Karoo sheep. They are almost like our Suffolks, very interesting. Have you ever had the meat?

Royston - Welcome to our thread, hope to see more from you. And you're right, the D800/105 IS a good combo.

Hi George, welcome to this little manual focus Nikon world.

You picked 2 really nice lenses already. Can´t really go wrong with any of the Nikon 28mm lenses and the 105 f2,5 is one of my personal favorites as well.

Depending on how big/small you would like to keep your manual focus lens selection either the 180 f2,8 ED Ai.S or one of the 135 f2,8 lenses would be another fine addition and on a crop sensor camera very well

Thanks! I'm probably going to expand my MF lens collection beyond the point of practicality - it's a personality quirk, er, strength.

Since I also like shooting architectural details I think my next acquisition will be the 200 F4. Then probably the 135. Then a 18 f3.5 for landscape. Just need to keep going to the gym so that I can haul all this stuff around!

Who is this Monty character? An echo from bygone days? Of course, folks could say the same thing about me.

I've been following the conversation about the new Nikon camera, the Df and noted a few familiar faces on the thread so thought I'd stop by and say hello. I actually took the camera with me yesterday for a birthday celebration and got a couple of worthwhile "family" photos with the 55 f/1.2 S.C. AI'd. I have to admit it was when my friend Jesse picked up my camera to take a few photos that I finally remembered it was there…

So here are two shots of my friend's child Ansel… if you can imagine. But dad is a photography buff so why not. It wasn't his birthday but he was sure having a good time. First photo at f/2.8, the second at f/2.

He loves avocados, though this one didn't strike his fancy and ended up on his mother's lap.

Hope all is well everyone. I shall return… as General MacArthur said as he left the Philippines… This will always be my home for photography.

I thought I posted something here recently, but I guess not...

58mm noct/D800E It's fun to show a great lens versatility sometimes. The Noct is not a 1 trick pony. (meaning low light/night) or even color! Which honestly, the Noct does so well.
