A monument to Francis Scott Key, author of the Star Spangled Banner, is right in front of the Eutaw Place Temple. Here's a couple images of the memorial taken with the 85 1.8 HC.

Key was on a British ship negotiating a prisoner release during the bombardment of Baltimore Harbor, so he was not allowed to leave and had to watch the action from the ship. The plaque depicts that battle, the American defenders looking out at the British naval ships.

Here's the complete monument. Key is depicted in a boat with an oarsman with the mythical Columbia at the top. The steeple of the City Temple of Baltimore is directly beyond in the background.

Nick, here's a discussion on the ad for the Df. People were really dissing the 43-86mm zoom, but then one has to look at the origin of some of those statements

Thanks for the link, I do recall seeing that photo, just didn't catch the zoom. Mine is the later version, so perhaps that's why it's performance seems better then the reviews.

Just when I thought I could identify the major Japanese foods
And can name them reasonably well
This bowl of minced meat topped rice made me squint at the photos
Then the menu, wondering how on earth they could specialize in something so simple
Ah deceptively, sometimes the simplest can be the toughest to master
The taste, so subtly sweet, its name I now speak in whispered pleasure - soboro don

>>

LV-ed my way to this.
I sometimes cringe at the loud clack of the D700 shutter
In this instance, I think cymbals or even a marching band wouldn't have made much of a difference to this fella
Took multiple shots, fiddling in between, the scene didn't change at all!

Oosty, Nick, Leighton, Saph, Zichar and MP356

I appreciate the warm welcome and comments.

The series below was shot on Lake Kissimmee near Brahma Island. The Island has been in the hands of the same family since purchased from King George in the 1700's.

The Buffalo like the greener grasses and will go into the water to get it during the winter. The Gators are territorial and nests and can be found time after time if you know where to look.

The four year old was stretched out and easily spotted, the babies were "lucky" find just under the boat. The splash in the mud was a male probably about 10-11FT (3m +) getting under the water and away from the airboat.

There is an air boat operator at Grape Hammock on the south end of the lake that will take you to these places.

Buddy, nice set from rural Germany (I assume). Love the saturated moss-colors.

Nick, nice work with your 43-86!

Peter, love the D200's flower-colors!

Ken, welcome! The second shot from your 1st set is my personal fav.

Jeff, ahh, the sea looks so peaceful on your sunset-shot. Perfect use of the small wave to add some "tension" (for the lack of a better term) to the shot.

Samy, another very interesting sets of your local churches! The monument is very nicely captured too, I like especially the second shot for showing the unusual mix of materials and the "layout" of this monument.

Andy, very cool ďRural Queenslandď set! Love the second shot - nice backlight! The processing of the sculpture-shots is very nice, my favs are the last two shots.

Chin, why "Rabbit cuddling"? Is this a Tamagotchi of some sort? I was under the impression that those toys were died outÖ Nice catch - and I agree about the D700's shutter. A fellow shooter has some recent Canon (5D3 or so, don't know) and it's really quiet compared to the loud D700.

Shot the local New-Years-Eve-event yesterday but my timing was better the year before ;-(
Any way, the PC-Nikkor 28/3.5 worked very well here. Shifted up about 9mm, the fuzzy rendering at the borders and the hard to correct distortion didn't matter here.

D3s at ISO200, PC 28/3.5 at f/8, 6seconds exposure

I think about switching to in-camera multi-exposures for the next fireworks-display, but I'm not sure about it.

Phillip, wow, what a crowd on the bridge! Btw, I'm not too fond of using longer focal lengths for fireworks, except when I can include a known landmark (church spire, monument) into the frame.

Philippe, what's up with the Gates of Hell? Is this an infamous night-club? I like your shot, just don't get your title ;-)

Chin, superb image of the engrossed guy, must have been quite important whatever it was I looked up soboro don, seems quite a tasty and hearty dish.

Ken, good look at the gators, especially the 4 year old. Never heard of Brahma Island. And in my sole airboat ride in Florida I didn't run into bison either, that's neat.

Georg, thanks, and quite a demo on how to use the 28 3.5 PC to its strengths with that new year fireworks photo - brilliant image!

In response to Chin's earlier question the church exteriors and the monument were all handheld. I did do the interior of one today though with the 14-24 AFS and the 55 1.2 S and used a tripod. Will post the former in the MF-AF thread.

Leighton, thanks, but I doubt it

Georg, really nicely done. Who would have thought a firework image done in B&W would be this nice, but it is.

Samy and Leighton: thanks for your comments! I prefer B&W for night-shots in most cases. The lighthouse was lit up brightly and it's color didn't mixed well with the fireworks.

I couldn't agree more!

I've never had the pleasure of working with a PC lens, but have always been curious... Perhaps I'll have to keep an eye out for an inexpensive one to learn a thing or two. All of these PC images you guys are posting are spectacular!

The storm arrives. We are in for a good winter storm the next day or so (most of the Midwest and northeast US). Since last night 14" of snow, plenty of wind, and a high in the single digits today. Took a walk a noon today for some early storm shots. All taken with the 35 f2 Ai. Stay warm and safe everyone. Thanks for looking.

Thatís just jaw-droppingly good, georg. Iíve never thought of fireworks in B&W but youíre right, it could possibly be better because your eyes are drawn to the bright flowers. The placement of tones is perfect.

Oh and the title refers to the logo. Sorry I canít locate a larger version elsewhere online.
http://www.jrhakatacity.com.e.bv.hp.transer.com/gourmet/genjiro/
But it was puzzling me for the entire meal from the moment I stepped into the restaurant and looked at the signboard.
I guess being in a foreign place and not understanding the language didnít help. Did they serve rabbit? Was the chef or ownerís favourite pet a rabbit?
It was only when we left and I took one hard look at the signage again, then a quick side glance to the windowed cooking area where the cook was busy preparing oyakodon, it struck me. Itís a chicken!

Nick and Chin - thanks for your kind words! If weather and spare time co-operate I'll try to post an illustrated mini-review of the PC 28/3.5 soon.

Chin, thanks for the explanation. I think I got it now - the chef prefers to cuddle with bunnies and is serving chicks or so

Scott, the "Life is good"-lettering caught my eyes before reading your caption. Nice catch! Hope the snow-storm won't cause any serious problems.
Btw, are you straighten your shots in post? The church-sets from a week or so ago made me think they could be corrected this way.
