Thanks for the comments.

Jay, you have some awesome glass. I'll be looking for your contributions.

Georg, the paisley and fur in the hats clashed with my solid beige photog's vest. I did buy fruit, flowers, candy, art, and fish. each from a different vendor. Also had my first every asian pear...which was so awesome a got a couple to bring home. For the newspaper, I always used a written release for the specific product we were producing at that time.

Leighton, This one hour stroll was was a revelation to me. In all my years I don't believe I have every encountered a hostile vendor. So, for me to see red faced anger, and yelling - all occurring because people were shooting photos without asking - plus not buying. It immediately became a challenge to me...to defuse the tension. I never expected to be thanked for doing what was simply right. And the vendors all seemed to have wonderful senses of humor, but my timing was critical. As soon as they finished yelling - I asked. The disbelief in their eyes would evaporate when I would respond..."That's them...this is me asking". I know, it is silly, but they all laughed. They should teach civics to kids in school, or manners. Civility sure makes life better, imo.

Ronny that second damsel fly shot is incredible! Great composition. I have visions of you...the Reclining Swede ...always getting the low angle on bugs, and slugs, flowers and dogs leaping logs. I'm teasing you, but I really do love your work.

In the richness of time available to the busy people that rush around us each day, and the quest for riches that maybe beyond our wildest dreams, we the grey people on the fringes quail in the attitude of frenzy that leaves us in the hedgerows of pedestrian life.

The angst that many people who are engaged on the treadmill of commercialism find to be part of their everyday life, bewilders us, as we quietly wander our life course armed with nothing more that a Nikon MF lens attached to our humble camera.

The grey days that beset us are there only to try our creative abilities, sometimes winning out as we fail and fall into obscurity, leaving the way for many around us with higher expectations and abilities. It is not for us to become discouraged by this state of indifference, but to take the day by the lapels and shake some sort of image out of it. Bringing, if not satisfaction, then, and wry grin that says at least we tried.

As we wander the streets and lanes of the world at large we are confronted with images and possibilities that make us in one instant Constable, then Picasso, then Monet, and then even Damien Hirst. Or perhaps just the tapestry of life engraves itself upon our minds and leaves us a little richer as the artist we have become at whatever level we find ourselves. Whatever our endeavour we try our best and find that we are in the company of like minded individuals who share the passion for our given art. For art it is, and whatever form it takes, no one can argue that there is not an art in wielding a manual focus lens on the front of our favoured body of capture.

(what a pretentious load of bu****it)

Just get back to reality Steve !!!

Inspired by Leightons neighbourhood pictures I was out this morning in the rain .... oh yes ... it was RAINING !!!

Using the 25-50 f4 @ f11 ISO200

Note that the autumn colours have not really arrived yet due to no frost to date ....

But did I mention the rain .... well it was doing plenty of that.

Steve

I think you're right about teaching civility. I thought it was once taught, but it's been sooo long since I was in school I can't remember.

Speaking of civility...we had a public meeting about a month ago to confront a local Councilman and his idiotic ideas about how the City government should run our farmers' market. When he saw a bunch of us farmers show up, he started the meeting with a ten minute diatribe about how nice it is to be civil at public meetings. I guess he thought since we were farmers, they we all like to fight and throw things! Doesn't really matter because in the end, we won and he withdrew his proposals.

Hey Leighton .... Just a reminder for you that James Herriott is a Yorkshireman, (apparently we are on the dark side of the hill) and like my previous diatribe - it's fiction

Thanks for reminding me what a beautiful place it is, we get a bit too familiar with it and forget that others love the place.

Cheers

Steve

John, wouldn't the 180mm f/2.8 be a reasonable competitor to the 75mm f/1.8 Oly?

Yes, if only it were as good. The 75/1.8 is sharp completely across the frame wide open, with just a bit low in contrast and very minimal CA (that's easily fixable in post and it only occurs in specular highlights) - it reminds me of the 100/2 MP Zeiss in many ways.

A light, sharp-across-the-frame, Nikon 150/2.8 would be great for my D800 . . . heck I'd love Nikon to come out with the patented 135/1.8AFS someday soon.

Totally agree John. I've only had the Oly 75/1.8 for a couple of weeks, but it's already my favourite. It's pretty special.

Speaking of the 180/2.8 ...

These are from our Cambodia trip last November ... still have 1000's to go through. They are from a floating village outside of Siem Real on the Tonle Sap called Kompong Phluck. We were on a rickety old boat and these were some of the sights on the banks as we were cruising along.

All taken with the 180/2.8 Ai-S & D800E
