Don and Ray, have either of you tried the 35 f2 AIS?

I had one several years ago but sold it because I had too many lenses that I wasn't using. However, it's a little jewel and I recommend it highly (if you don't already have the 35/1.4).

That's one of the reasons I asked. I'm lacking in this FL and after seeing Ray's work with the 1.4 I knew I wanted one. I'm just not sure which. I know the f2 is a LOT more affordable.

Would you say the sharpness and contrast are on par with each other at f2?

As we all know, the 35/1.4 isn't very sharp wide open but gets considerably sharper with more contrast stopped down to f2. The 35/2 is already sharp and contrasty at f2 and is more or less equal to the 35/1.4 at this aperture (at least that's my experience).

I have never used this lens Leighton but here is a review that basically says after F4 it and the 35mm 1.4 are similar.

Thank you very much Don and Ray. I think for what I'll be using it for the f2 would suit my needs quite nicely. Time to shop.

I like the barbed-wire shot Eric, but you shouldn't call it shit!

Rick - nice shots! I like especially the barbed wire.

Don, fabulous and very enigmatic night-shots! I like them all, but the giant shadow captured through the PC-E 24 stands out for me.

Chin, very "edgy" street-shot, a good fit for the kinda stone-like expressions. Btw, the phrase "Chin to Chest" makes me ponder ;-)

Ray, the 20/3.5 Ais seems to be a good match for the D600, I really enjoy looking at your work with it.

Leighton, the "Fields of Ice" are wonderful! Love the sparkling iced plants against the background.
Btw, the 35/2 Ais is a sensible pick among the other 35's. It lacks the widely and controversial discussed bokeh of the manual 35/1.4 and is much smaller than the modern AF 35/1.4's. Nikon's dated AF/AF-D 35/2 has many friends too, but is lacking the smooth manual focusing experience. I'm sure you will like "your future copy" ;-)

Ugh forgot about this one I was working on last night
Gotta get ready for work

At the yakitori (bbq meat skewers) store, men with beer and a few sticks from the counter
Not dissimilar to a tapas bar?
We were attracted by the smell of meat on charcoal grill and of course, the huge plumes of smoke!

Thanks Georg!

And thanks for the comment on the 35. I read somewhere that the 35/2 AFd didn't perform all that well on the D600/800 due to resolution. Have you heard anything like that?

I've heard the 35/2AF is challenged (especially in the corners) by the demanding D800 sensor, sorry, don't have a clue about the D600. This lens is smaller (and closer focusing) than the MF-Nikkors and AF-speed is really good. Many PJ-style shooters were or are using this lens.
But the slightly larger manual 35/2 is a very sensible pick in my opinion.

First off, thank you everyone for the comments on the winter scene series.

A lot of activity here on the thread the past day. Good to see everyone posting.

Jeff, Yosemite is a beautiful park. I especially like your vertical image of the rock climbers.

Ray, nice work with the 20 3.5. You need a little snow down there.

Peter, I like the "cat" pano. Nice looking boat.

John, beautiful place to hike. The fisheye and pano are terrific.

Samy, nice comparison shots. The 180 performs quite well. Love your icicles image.

Reagan, well composed asparagus fern.

Leighton, WOW! love the "The Valley" b&w with the 50-135. Is that lens rusted to your D600.

Don, the night street scenes are wonderful. Great compositions.

Eric, I like the frosty barbed wire.

Leighton, lovely icicled valley in your neighborhood. Good to hear your power stayed on.

Ray, nice decorated path image in warm Florida to make us up here more jealous. December's only the beginning..

Eric, notwithstanding the spelling of shots your prisoner/barbed wire image is very nice. I see the oof lights beyond the barbed wire as beckoning freedom to the prisoner. The bird with the 200 macro is super, how do some of you folks get the little birds to sit still and so close?

Don, marvelous cover quality image as is your style! Did I understand correctly, are you really leaving the camera on the street for some of these and walking away from it with the remote in your pocket?

Chin, wow, what an image (step in step). Each individual is lost in deep thought walking towards where their destination is.

Thanks folks for the comments on the icicles shot. It took quite a bit of chopping stubborn ice across the driveway to get close enough to the branches with the 10.5cm lens

Thanks Samy! ! I was preparing my setup to take picture of snow flakes when birds start coming to the feeders. I shot trough the diners window! It would have been much better if I was outside. Oh well I guess you can't have causy warmth and nice winter birds shots I got lucky, I pre focus and he show up right in the target! Bam, I fired away and was really happy when I saw the result.

I picked up a 35 and 50 f/2.8 from ebay for $50 combined. The 50 is a pancake as well. Lots of good lenses out there for cheap.

Scott: You had one where the dead tree branches lay soft wispy shadows on the smooth sheet of snow atop the barnís roof, that was spectacular. Itís somewhat surreal to see vines growing out of the silo! I may have asked you this before, but have you ever been in one of these abandoned barns for a shoot?

Peter: I have to admit, I was pixel peeping to check out any misalignments in the catamaran stitch. Iíve never been able to do an object stitch successfully, well done!

Leighton: I typed out a bit about the twigs in the far right corner for The Valley and forgot to click submit. Looks like you got them out of the way Itís a fab image, a great contrast between the crisp hard icicles and the soft mist out back. I also love how the light seems to shine on the house itself, through perhaps a parting in the clouds.

Don: Simply stunning. It seems effortless how you make shadows look so stylish and sexy. Have you ever had any of those characters come up to ask you what you were up to?

Eric: Great composition on the image with the frost-covered barbed wire. The symmetry is perfect as are the soothing blues, very moody.

Any of you folks looking for a good tripod, head, monopod, and maybe a couple lenses? Need to unload some gear since I lost my job and want to get some gifts for my wife and daughters.
