Hi Jay,

I will try and post some lens porn of the 200 F2 and maybe a few other of my favorite lens's for a small family portrait maybe tomorrow.
I'll leave out the step children and second cousins etc (same focal length but different speeds, coated and non coated etc). I might scare myself if I got the whole family together, I would have to admit I have a problem and there would be photographic evidence of my addiction. There are still a few more lens's I HAVE to get before I admit to my problem

Americo has posted one of what looks like the same or possibly a previous generation to mine. The newest version has a inline filter holder in front of the aperture ring. Mine came with a lockable hard case/trunk also. If your patient you can find one for much cheaper but they are pricey $1/000 - 1,400.00 range if your patient. the newest version seems to go for around $300 or so range more. But unless you really need the extra speed and very slight reach the 180 2.8 would be much cheaper and nearly as good optically (just my opinion, could differ from others). In my case with pictures of hummingbirds I was shooting with my 70-200 VRII in the late evening fully open (2.8) and having to slow the shutter to much. During the late evening it (or they?) seem to stop and hover more often, giving me a better chance at a shot.
I just received the lens the night before last and I really like it already, but it is Big and Heavy.

Someone once said Kit building is forever... I would have to add (for myself) and an addiction.

Thanks,
JD

Thanks for the reply JD, very informative.

Indeed, I have the 180/2.8 and it's my favorite "every day-ish" MF Nikkor (the 500/4 is my favorite, but is in no way an every day lens). I'm not sure I'd "need" the 200/2 but it'd be fun to play with nonetheless.

Once again, great work on the birds, and thanks for the reply!

The 180/2.8 is on my short list along with the 135/2.0 and 25-50 zoom and maybe the 85/1.4. I also have a small gap in my kit between the 16mm and 24mm that needs a 18mm or 20mm (or both?). Then I will go long, but probably with a Auto Focus first, would love a 400 2.8, but that's probably next year.
Missed out on a good price for a 180 a few weeks ago. It is a good focal length for me for most of my needs, especially any street photography as I don't like getting in people faces and 180 would suit me well.

The 180 is a great lens, especially for the price. I used it for some street photography last summer around the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and enjoyed it.

Then I will go long, but probably with a Auto Focus first

I don't blame you for wanting an AF supertele, but as many of the forum members in this thread have shown, you can get pretty great results from some of the old MF supers.

I'll move up to the AFS (or VR) 500/4 at some point, maybe in 10 or 15 years when work allows me enough free time to justify the price of the lens!

JD _ the humming birds are awesome. Well done.

Georg - I like your trams. At first glance I thought someone was underneath the new one!

Jose - beautiful thrush.

Inspired by Harry I took out the 500mm f8 reflex last evening. I was a bit late after playing lawn bowls all afternoon but was able to capture a couple of keepers.

All handheld at pretty slow shutter speeds for such a light tele lens.

Then when I got home there was a magnificent display in the sky so I grabbed the closest available lens - the 28 3.5 PC and snapped three shots for a pano.

Thanks Scott. Funny you should ask and probably not what you think. I bought a Yongnuo RF-603 kit off Amazon a while back to use with my flash. But it also works great as a wireless shutter release.

JD, the 180 is a must have as far as I'm concerned. And for short lists...the 135/2 and 85/1.4 is on mine as well. Also the 35/1.4.

Sar Wonderful dragon shot.
Chuong Wonder if that bird is in a leafless gum tree!
Leighton Nice family shots.
Ron Nice to see the new camera's results.
JD Those are great, all I get are blurs with those hummers.
Georg Nice looking streetcars, not much ground clearance with the new ones though.
Jose The feather detail is fantastic, great thrush shot.
Peter Nice work with the 500mm. I found a cheap off brand version and it is horrible. Very pretty sky pano at sunset.
