Sainte-Mère-Eglise, monument to John Steele.
His parachute was caught in one of the back pinnacles of the church tower, causing the cables on his parachute to stretch to their full length, leaving him hanging on the backside of the church to witness the carnage. The wounded paratrooper hung there limply for two hours, pretending to be dead, before the Germans took him prisoner. Steele later escaped from the Germans and rejoined the 82 nd Airborne.

I do remember that story of Sainte-Mere-Eglise, not sure from a movie or from some text, although I didn't know the soldier escaped later.

Ronny, very nice images of those buildings in your town! That graffiti is neat.

something like this will do

more seriously - it's a custom cap, hard to find, so you may have to improvise, or get something that has the right diameter from lenscoat (their "hoody" caps are nice but expensive, don't know if they come as small as what you'd need). I have some neoprene from making my own lenscoat, plus some hard foam and a little patience would make a nice cap that easily removes and won't even be as heavy as the original metal cap.

I had it all figured out but then my bid didn't make it in - your lucky day

Tests of the 13.5cm 3.5 Q, and the 10.5cm 2.5 P 6-blade and 9-blade versions. All at f4, no post processing done other than cropping. As I mentioned yesterday the 13.5cm does not have a click stop at f4, but somewhere between the 3.5 and 5.6 stops it does register f4 on the camera.

Both are a little ways back now, but Leighton, I didn't want to let some of your recent photos slip by without commenting. The sheep in the fog is just great, as is the landscape shot with the grapes. I really like both of them.

Curtis I understand the politics of bidding and play the game like most. I honestly don't think for one minute you need to jack up the prices bidding on lenses to the point when others miss out.

For my part, I bid for some, and am in the fortunate position to come by some magnificent lenses by being part of the photographic trade. So when someone wants to trade in their older MF Nikon kit for Leica equipment, for that is what we sell, then I can pick up some real bargains and often in extremely good condition. I don't get

With a job like that Steve, at least on a thread like this, you could easily have a great many new best friends... You could become the go to guy for our European friends who may be in the market for used Nikon MF gear. I don't know whether that would be kosher with your employer but that could be a nice sideline for them... using you to market lenses to folks on this thread... You can see how it is that I earned the title "Devil..." I can always find ways to encourage folks to buy lenses...

Even if that makes no sense, you are in an enviable position to pick up some fine gear. We all should be so lucky...

I am sure you remember my insane tube setup I posted a few pages back; 150mm of tubes and my macro 55mm. I could get 4:1 with that setup. Got me thinking... I reversed my 28/3.5 in front of that stack and measured 8.1:1!!! Holy cow! It's a bear of a setup, but I hope to try it out "outside of the lab" soon.

Very nice description of the experience Peter. As I recall what I'd read it was very much like that... the sense of being transported from ordinary life. The same can happen in extended spiritual retreats where the rhythm of sitting, walking, eating and sleepingm all in silence, allows the concerns of ordinary life to slip away. Of course, at a retreat very healthy food is served and one isn't carrying a 45 pound pack for hours. However, the psychic baggage being carried into a retreat can be quite substantial as well...

Wonderful photo that conveys the experience you describe.

One that is not easy to find...

It is possible a later cap for the 16 f/2.8D might fit but I'm not certain about that... I just checked and it won't. The diameter of the 16 f/3.5 is 68mm. The f/2.8 is 63mm. This will be your next hunt... Congratulations on the lens though. John may have a suggestion about how to work with the lens as it is.

EDIT - I just measured the diameter of the lens hood that extends from the body and onto which the hood would connect and it measured closer to 63mm. I was using lens measurements above so that may not be relevant to your situation. Yes, you have some exploring to do... Good luck.

EDIT #2 - This might be the cap... brand new from an LA seller. Definitely worth checking out...

Nikon 16 Fisheye Lens Cap

EDIT #3 - I just got an email from the seller of this cap and he said that it is for the 16 f/3.5... so you're in luck... even if the price is steep. These have got to be rare since the lens has been out of production for TWENTY FOUR years...

Great photos everyone, the quality in this thread is exceptional. Me, I just wanted to get a sunset, but the clouds here do not light up often. This is the look of disappointment. blurry face as it was a 8 second exposure with gray clouds. Long after the sun had set.

VERY cool shot Rafael... You set it up perfectly with that railing running across the bottom balanced by your look of disappointment. Clever way to drop a self-portrait on the thread. Love it.

I'm not so sure about you being the 'Devil' - Curtis.

But I have no problem being the European Friend ....

If I haven't got a lens in my collection then it won't usually be for sale. But If I have one already then it's open to the right offer. Our Leica store is more a group of very good friends who work together, thus making for a very good working atmosphere.

But we have had some interesting stuff recently. Plus quite a few film bodies in excellent condition like F2AS black and silver.

Anyway back to pictures.

Here are a couple more taken on the 500mm f4P ISO800 @ f5.6 1/500th

You're going to make Jose very happy with these Steve. I'll likely never go that long but the 500 f/4 is surely a great lens. You've perhaps read about Jose's trick of putting out a banana to entice birds to come close to his balcony. He gets some great shots that way.

I wonder if the tit was simply trying to ignore you with its turn... Wonderful work!

Nice pic Rafael

It's not difficult to get a selfie with that lens is it.

Imagine if you'd had the 6mm .... you'd have had trouble keeping out of the shot with that lens.
