Perhaps Florida doesn't offer busy backgrounds... Those look fine to me.

My shot, like Georg's had some light coming through trees. I don't think the bokeh in the shot I post is as busy as what Georg has produced but I don't know whether that is indicative of 9 versus 7 blades or simply the conditions of the scene and the lighting.

Funny Ray that you're perfectly content with the lens and here we are trying to find problems... We're silly.

Problems I actually really like the bokeh in yours and Georg's photos. Call me crazy

Just to be different - I do not like the bokeh of that 35mm f/1.4 - it's interesting and rather extreme, and the images shown here are really good, but it seems like a one trick pony and not worth the price it demands. Hey, that leaves more of those 35mm f/1.4 for the rest of you to buy

Thank you all for the very kind comments, it means a lot!

Philip - Congratulations! Now maybe you can join in a little more.

Curtis and Ray, love the work with the 35/1.4. I'm undecided if I like the bokeh or not.

Peter you are not different, you are normal. Not many people do like the bokeh. To the 35mm 1.4's credit it is one of the sharpest lenses Nikon makes. The bokeh is my BONUS

Just have to chime in here too: really wonderful foggy morning photos around your farm Leighton!

A couple of other randoms from the past dozen+ pages:

Tom, your photography story was great! I tend to agree that printing out photos is much more fun than looking at them on the computer screens. My wife and I usually try to pick one of my photos to have printed large and framed every year at Christmas time as a kind of mutual gift to ourselves.

Ray, that NIKKOR*ED 180mm f/2.8 AI-s was a steal! Congrats!

And, on another note, I successfully defended my PhD two days

congrats Philip - well done!

I did not like the bokeh of the 35mm either so I went with the brand started with the last letter in the alphabet. I am happy with it but I love posting on here so I rarely use it .

Since I'm not bitten by any collector bug, I find myself quite often in the Korean budget MF lens camp, especially when looking at a 35mm f/1.4 - the Rokinon/Samyang/Bower lenses are amazingly sharp, have nice bokeh and actually are cheaper than the old Nikkors. Maybe not that well built, but the3 Rokinons I have used so far are fantastic lenses for the money. But yeah, you can't post on this thread...

In a way, I just don't like the 35mm FOV in general and a heavy large f/1.4mm 35mm wouldn't get much use in my camera bag anyway, just like I rarely ever use the 85mm f/1.4 I do own. I'm much more interested in the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 because it is a great lens for star photography, and there's really no old Nikkor alternative for that use (needs to be sharp wide open, and the 24mm f/2.0 is not)

another panorama - Mono Lake from a viewpoint north of it in Hwy 395. I think this was 5 horizontal frames with the 105mm f/2.5 - somewhat too skinny for web display, even 1400 wide:

Congrats, Philip, big time!!! I hope you and your friends went out and celebrated. Having been down that path, I can really, really get a grip on what you've gone through. Here's to ya

Leighton... Many years ago when I was an ultra-marathon runner, as you may likely know, there was (and may still be) an event named The Old Dominion 100 Miler. It began at the 4H Campgrounds just outside Front Royal and meandered up and over Skyline Drive, down into the Valley, across the Shenandoah River, and then up to the top of the first ridge line in the Massanutten Mt. It's now become this I think.. .http://www.vhtrc.org/mmt/ Anyways.... your photos of the foggy landscapes transported me so dramatically back into those days, those early AM weather conditions, and those events, that it was "de ja vu all over again."

To all of you all... you guys and gals are the best..

Here are a couple from my 85/1.4 and F4; still trying to get proficient with film Each is shot on Fuji 400H as I recall and most probably on P mode and extensively PP'd in Aperture especially to knock down the highlights and reduce the brightness of mid-day sun.

Beautiful panorama Peter!

Couple images, first back from the Florida trip. 400 5.6 ED AIS, probably at f8. Should have clicked a fraction of a second earlier to get the entire bird in the background.

Yellow Red flower with the 13.5cm 3.5 + PN-11 extension tube, at f5.6. Interestingly enough while there is no click stop at f4 on this lens, for some part of the rotation of the focus ring between f3.5 and f5.6, the D800 registers the aperture as f4.

Thank you Bert and Tony.

Tony, now that you mention it, I do remember you being a ultra-marathoner. Glad I could jog a memory. The same thing happened to me the other day with one of RM's images. Love the East facade of City Hall.

Peter, Nice pano.

Samy, Don't you just hate that when you should of clicked a second earlier?

Ray, Now that's what I'm talking about, great door! Aren't they fun to search out and shoot? Or am I just weird?

My observations of the difference between the Nikon 180 2.8 AIS and the 180 2.8 AI

1. The AI is beefier, a tiny bit longer and heavier
2. The AI has a green tone to the coating
3. The AIS has a purple tone to the coating
4. Both lenses are equally sharp
5. The AIS has a bit more contrast
6. Perhaps the AIS might handle CA a bit better because of the ED glass although there wasn't much difference at all.
7. The focal lengths are different. The AI version is a bit wider
8. AI photos are first AIS second

All in all the older Ai version held up much better than I thought it would. Here's a link to the photos.
I am also doing a review of the differences between the 105 2,5 Sonnar and Guass. More to come
