Meet the Kendall Katwalk - ~50 yards of terror for some due to the sheer 150ft drop off, but to me it was "meh".
This is part of the PCT - Pacific Crest Trail - that runs from Mexico all the way to Canada. Walk for two or three weeks North and you are in Canada, walk two or three months South from here and you hit Mexico.

Some very smelly hikers can be found on this trail.

We met a couple while on our way out (it's 11 miles round trip to the Katwalk) who had to take the third person in their party all the way back to the trailhead, spend the night in a hotel at the pass, then walk all the way back in this morning because their friend totally freaked out about having to cross the Katwalk. They had set up their camp on the other side and left their tent/food/etc. there during the night.

Anyways, it was one of the most scenic hikes I've done in a while - truly stunning on such a nice day. A very strong wind/rain/lightning storm had come through about 1:30 am so everything was a bit wet. Some of the folks hiking through on the PCT said it was quite the event last night being in the clouds during the lightning storm.

Anyways - more picture to come - I'm too tired and need to eat dinner!

John, thank you! I'm really glad you like this one. I have a weak spot for old ships and smaller vessels and wanted to try something "calm" after spotting this small steamship.

Rafael, thanks! Will do in the next days. Is posting a full frontal shot of an Ai-Nikkor legal over at the US?

Amazing scenario, wonderfully captured, John. But 150 ft straight down is a bit much for my taste ;-)

I really like this shot. Perhaps a tad more sea would make it better, but not by much. Perfect for monochrome display.

Tom, I have a 460xxx ais from the eighties, I do not believe the optical formula is any different for the 60xxxx lenses. My lens is useless at 1.4 if there are point light sources in the frame, excellent at 2.0, really good at 2.8, and as good as anything else I own from 4.0 to 8.0 on the D800.

Go check this at flicker at 100% on the D800. If you want a nocturnal, this is not the lens, no matter the SN. IF the price is right I would not wait.

Thanks for the feedback! I think that my experience, should I buy this lens, might be different from yours since I will be shooting film with it. From what I gather, it is the digital cameras, especially the higher resolution ones that expose the flaws of this lens. I could be wrong on this but that is what I believe I have read.

My 460xxx has 9 aperture blades and the best multi coating quality. It is sharp at 1.4, but it cannot handle lights in the frame at full aperture.

D'oh!! I should have counted the blades when I had the dang lens in my hand!!! SIGH.

I never considered that the Nikon lens database could be wrong.

Tom, thanks! Here is an alternative take on the old steam-ship. I prefer the first version.
I could shoot stuff like this for days, unfortunately other vessels were messing up the clean back- and foreground.

Thank you too Curtis. Did Sue make it home?

Today's flight was delayed an hour and a half, but YES, she arrived safely. A friend put together dinner for us and I just dropped her off. She'll sleep at her friend's home and tomorrow she'll have the first look at her new apartment. Busy times ahead. Thanks for asking.

Incidentally, the husband in this couple loves to have lamb burgers every day and buys his lamb at the local farmer's market. I told him about your operation and life in the Shenandoah Valley. He was very interested. This is one of the local producers from which he buys his freshly ground lamb...

Hi Leighton. Sorry my question is not clear! It was not 35 vs 135 (I *WILL* get both one day). I am wondering if buying a 35mm f/1.4 with a serial number lower than 479XXX is a good idea. According to that link I posted, above 479XXX gets more aperture blades, and Super Integrated Coating. I can't find one higher than that serial number now so I am dead in the water buying one until I get lucky. I just want to confirm that waiting is the right thing to do.

That 135mm f/2 AIS lens is real beautiful!

I'll chime in on this subject. My 35 f/1.4 AI-s has a serial number of 434867, so well before the new coating was used. As I've bought older pre-AI lenses a question about the coatings comes up and frankly, I've concluded this is not a matter worth getting worked up about. I bought an 85 f/1.8 H after my attempts to purchase an H.C. version of the lens proved fruitless. I also bought a lens hood to counter what was supposed to be a problem with the lens because it didn't have the improved coating. I've shot with Nikki, an H.C. and with my own H and frankly, I can't tell a difference. I wouldn't tie myself in knots about the matter. I've no doubt that improvements in coatings are made that make a difference for some photographers in some situations, but "new and improved" can be as much a marketing device as much as anything else, especially with camera lenses made out of metal that will last a lifetime. That hardly suits the needs of a company that sells those products.

If the lens is in great shape and the price is right, you'll always be able to get your money out if he decide you don't like the lens. Color production from this lens is quite delicious and I imagine it is a focal length that will work for you. I don't use mine often probably because I enjoy the 28mm focal length and have three lenses at that length. But the 35 is certainly a very beautiful lens.

Kit building is forever Tom, so relax and enjoy the journey...

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, there have been too many good pictures posted since my last visit to comment on them all. However, I'd like to point out that it seems as though the bar has been raised a bit recently - the quality of pictures has increased - which is inspiring and is pushing me to improve my own photography. Cheers, everyone!
