Hi Leighton. Sorry my question is not clear! It was not 35 vs 135 (I *WILL* get both one day). I am wondering if buying a 35mm f/1.4 with a serial number lower than 479XXX is a good idea. According to that link I posted, above 479XXX gets more aperture blades, and Super Integrated Coating. I can't find one higher than that serial number now so I am dead in the water buying one until I get lucky. I just want to confirm that waiting is the right thing to do.

That 135mm f/2 AIS lens is real beautiful!

Oh I know it wasn't in the mix, that's just what I'd get before the 35. But to answer your question, I would most definitely wait to get the 9 bladed version. Just my 2 cents.

Very nice series Leighton. Looks like that rain was really coming down. Hope it was a warm rain at least. Did you keep the gear dry?

Thanks buddy. Too bad you weren't there. The gear NEVER got wet.

Stopped at one of the locks on the canal today. All taken with the 28 2.8 ais. The last one is my attempt at a b&w conversion in Lr4. Thanks for looking.

All are nice Scott, but this one is my favorite. A good first attempt at B&W. That 28 lives on your camera doesn't it?

Excellent photo, Chin. I love looking at your work ... and being shot in my home state makes it even more special.

Port Lincoln on the Eyre Peninsula ... you really saw a fair bit of South Australia on your last trip.

It does spend a fair amount of time there. But as you know, it is soooooo sharp and when focused up close develops some nice backgrounds. On my D7000 it works as a standard focal length lens. Nice to see you use the 105 today. Another beauty of a lens.

Thanks, Leighton. No silly sunbursts or bokeh-play just for vanity this time

The rain-shot is great, somehow I think the slightly longer focal lengths (105/180mm) fit your style perfectly.

Any experts have recommendations on my quandary regarding the 35mm f/1.4 AIS? Should I hold out for a vesion with a serial number higher than 479XXX?

Thanks!

Tom, I have a 460xxx ais from the eighties, I do not believe the optical formula is any different for the 60xxxx lenses. My lens is useless at 1.4 if there are point light sources in the frame, excellent at 2.0, really good at 2.8, and as good as anything else I own from 4.0 to 8.0 on the D800.

Go check this at flicker at 100% on the D800. If you want a nocturnal, this is not the lens, no matter the SN. IF the price is right I would not wait.

Just found this taken at 5.6 with big floodlights just off the frame. Maybe it will help . I use it at 1.4 only when there are not lights in the frame. At 2.0 it handles point light sources well.

This is one shot at 1.4, highly processed to give it a old fim look.

This is at 1.4 as well, no processing at all

This is at 1.4 with no processing, just evening light.

My 460xxx has 9 aperture blades and the best multi coating quality. It is sharp at 1.4, but it cannot handle lights in the frame at full aperture.
