Jose - what a beautiful bird shot.

Jorge - those hands are amazing

Bert - the macros are terrific

John - just another awesome pano

Leighton - superb shots with the 1.2

Ray - the ibis is tack sharp and I also love the extreme DOF on the stopped down 35

Tom - these film shots are fantastic - just a shame I can't beam my "new" PC lens to you for a week or so to do an architectural portfolio

Samy - the lead is beautifully lit. As for the cats , the "eyes" have it.

Chin - so glad common sense prevailed over idiotic bureaucracy. Pleased your wife had a happy birthday and a couple of really top class images from S Australia.

Curtis - the water lily is lovely. All these old lenses have real character.

Leighton, Samy, Curtis - thanks. We are very fortunate to be living in a lovely part of an amazingly diverse country. Years ago when South Africans were not the world's best loved people there was a campaign to keep our tourist dollars at home and it was advertised as the "World in one Country". I have travelled the length and breadth from desert to rain forest, beaches to mountains and love it dearly.

Unfortunately, there was a period before digital when I was fed up with the wait for processing and/or return of slides and didn't take many pics at all.

As I've mentioned we're off to England, The US and France in two weeks for about a month and At the moment I'll be taking the PC, the 28 2.8 and one of the 50 f2's. They will suffice for the UK. Once I'm in America I'll have access to my son Simon's lenses and maybe use his D700 for a while - I might trade the PC for something else while I'm there.

Next year though I want to take a bit of an extended trip across SA to revisit some of my favourite spots and this time I will be armed with some MF nikkors. All DV, of course

I noticed it too, Leighton. However, Curtis and some others would always be welcome to share the view and a beer

@Rafael, thatan awesome collection. Its a shame that there is no shop around here with a stock of different f1.2 lenses so I could try them and see if that different look is what I would be going for. Since Im a bit of a stickler for sharpness Ill take your word for it and start looking for a 50mm f1.2 Ai-S, even if that means itll take a while before I can afford it.

CGrindahl wrote:
I wasn't so much speaking about the weight of the 55 as the squat shape. It is very close to the weight of the AI. The AI-s is a bit lighter.

I imagine you're aware that the AI-s version of the 28 f/2.8 has Close Range Correction but the AI does not. MFD is 0.2 versus 0.3 meters... probably not enough to write home about and depending on how you intend to use the lens likely not an issue. The lenses have different optical designs. I'll interested to hear your experience with the lens. I've certainly had excellent results with the

I am aware of the CRC on the 28mm Ai-S but I got a really good offer on a very nicely looking 28mm f2.8 Ai (around the price point for a well used 28mm f3.5 Ai) so I figured Id go for it since both lenses appear to be quite sharp wide open. Even the 24mm f2.8 is very sharp wide open from what I have recently seen on this thread but in this focal length I was particularly looking for a really low level of optical distortion and corner to corner sharpness. I expect to mostly focus in the 1m to 5m range based on how I currently use the Sigma 28mm f1.8 for this focal length. The Sigma it just too big to carry around.

For a 50mm sharpness is important as well but I would use that lens completely different which makes the f1.2 particularly interesting.

Hi gang! I'm getting back up to speed after a two week break for some eye work. Wow, 50 pages since then and a lot of great photos. Going back a few pages:

Chin, "racquet games" is a wonderful shot and the back story was very well done.

Curtis, beautiful flower with the 200/4 QC and I really like the composition of the b&w aloe.

Samy, really enjoyed your work with the indoor leaf.

RM, great look on your temple film shots.

Leighton, beautiful shots with the 50/1.2 and the field landscape is really fine.

Jose, gorgeous balcony bird!

Peter, very nice pano.

Peter in Madison, the Le Mans spoiler is a really nice composition.

Bert, terrific blue-eyed bird in "Resting" and "Lonesome Drop" has a great look.

John, beautiful pano. I really enjoyed your "blue sky" shots from Snow Lake.

Ray, love the results you got from your tripod adventure. Excellent work!

Chuong, beautiful flower with the tubed 105/2.8.

Mark, love "the Fence."

Georg, wonderful Baltic Sea shots. Really enjoyed the white cliffs and clouds.

My only wealth is Nikkor lenses, but it is indeed a beautiful and useful asset in the balance sheet, but surely you jest Curtis, because you only have one 55mm less than I.

You're definitely right Peter but I think Rafael has pretty deep pockets. Occasional shots of his home and his Corvettes suggest that he has done well in life. I'm happy for him and certainly admire his taste in camera gear. If anyone belongs on this thread it is him. That he shares occasional photos of his lenses is delightful.

And Peter, I love the shot from our balcony with your new lens. You have a very sweet home. South Africa looks a great deal like California, at least it appears so from photos you've shared. I'll look forward to your

I probably have less money than 90% of the participants in this thread, just been buying a lens or two every year for like 40, buy a Corvette every 35 years, my view is not 10% as nice as that of Peter's balcony. I am not as good looking as Curtis or lead as rich a life as Leighton, do not have an 800mm like Jose, or have beautiful young daughters like John or Philippe, family is the only true wealth, friends the gold in one's chest, so - off my case! Let's enjoy our hobby and pass these lenses to others when we reach the pearly gates.
