The sun played peekaboo with me today - I went to a place I wanted to shoot in the late afternoon-sun for quite a while now. No chance, the sun was shining bright as long as I was in the car. Stepped out of the car and the sun hid behind some clouds. Time for a coffee back in the car, the sun came out. And so on.

Anyway, here are two cloudy shots:

Rostock Bonsai von georgsfoto auf Flickr
3 stitched horizontal shots taken with the PC 85/2.8D (lens wide open)

Rostock Wucht von georgsfoto auf Flickr
2 horizontal shots with the PC-E 45/2.8D at f/4 stitched to a square
(should have included more of the foreground to get diagonal lines starting at the corners)

Thanks for the kind comments on my past shots, much appreciated!

Thanks for posting that link. His images look really good.

I'm looking at one of these as a dual purpose lens: first to add to my MF glass collection and second as a reasonably priced, tripod mountable zoom to do double duty as a high quality spotting scope (with a Nikon scope converter onboard). I want to be able to go from 5-7X up to 30-40X and there aren't too many other lenses out there that would seem to fit the bill.

I don't want to use my 80-400G with it since it's going to be subject to some abuse. The 50-300 is a little bigger then what I would consider the perfect size but it appears to be built like a tank and it certainly looks to have the IQ one would want in a MF lens when I want to shoot photos with it.

How does one get their pictures to show up like this? Do you have to tag your images in a certain way or do you have to be part of a group?

it probably has to be some sort of tag you need to add to each image to have it filtered for a particular lens in the lens explorer subset of it

Georg, thanks for the kind words. Is this shot WITHOUT any corrections from the lens?

Thank you Rafael, Leighton, Mark, Ray, Ronny, and Georg for the comments. Shooting in the harsh mid-day light presents its own set of challenges.

You guys are quite a pair Matt... a couple of goofs...

Really great to see photos of the two you and from your walk... every day a blessing with the added dividend of some very sweet photos. Fine work, but then we've come to expect nothing less from you.

Can someone give me their overall impression of the 50 300 F4.5 zoom?

The ED is the best choice for event photograpy on a tripod or monopod, or to travel by car and take well framed pictures at scenic stops; it is sharp and contrasty at all apertures and works well on the D800, It works well with converters on a monopod and a sunny day closed to f/8, I have never used the non ED ones. With scope converters you only use the center portion of the image and a 100-300 5.6 or the non ED 50-300 mm may be good enough for a lot less money. the ED is excellent on the short end and outstanding at the 300mm setting, it also maitains focus as you zoom. The focus and zoom rings are very smooth, the whole front rotates as you focus, but zooming is internal.

Personally I love using it for the right occassions and have no problem focusing this lens on the D800 at full aperture, even on slow moving targets. I will be using it this 4th of July at the Fair to photograph a dance group and for fireworks on San Diego Bay.

It is nothing I did on purpose, it must be the name of the photo or the Flickr Nikkor group official tag for the lens.

Thanks for the kind comments on my first batch of images from SD.

Today we took a drive and ended up doing a ~4 mile loop hike to the top of "Lovers Leap" and back.

Sorry for the images of me . . .

Nice work on the past few pages everyone. Matt and John, good to see the cameras turned on their masters for a change.

A couple from Albanifest, the 3 day celebration of one of the city's patron saints (St Alban) who was martyred in 283AD. For all the gruesome details of his martyrdom it's basically a 3 day fun fair / drinking and eating session but usually pretty well behaved and on Monday morning you'd never know it was there in good Swiss fashion.

On Saturday in rained heavily most of the day but on Sunday it was much better, we took my son for the first time in a ferris wheel and he took it pretty well.

Both taken with the 24mm f2.8 which I am slowly coming to grips with.
