Thanks Leighton, Georg, Ray, Ronny, James, Peter and Mark for the comments.

Ray, loved the squirrel and the dreamy flower with 85/1.4;

Rafael, gorgeous flowers and bee close up with the venerable 200/4 QC;

Kevin, wow, great details of the bee with the 80-200/4.5;

John, as usual fantastic panos with the 400/5.6 and 135/2;

Ronny, your flower shots are simply stunning!

Peter B and Curtis, more great flower shots from you;

Ben K, welcome back and what great portraits.

Leighton, I did not recorded the focusing distance, but supposedly it was around 25 to 30 cm. The 55/2.8 Micro has a MFD of 25cm, the same for the 110/5.6 combo.

Mark, some more (old ones) taken with this combo for you. I suspect one or more were already posted here, but anyway just to show you the "poor man" 105 micro can deliver acceptable results.

Flowers with moorning dew - Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 + TC201

Test with the "poor man" 105 mm micro Nikkor.
D3 + TC201 + 55mm f/2.8 micro ai-s (= 110mm f/5.6), hand held, ISO 500, f/5.6 (2.8) at 1/320s.
This was also a focus stacking test with no tripod (!!): 3 shots at a burst of less than a second changing slightly the focus. Both flowers have less than 2 cm diameter.

Jose, actually, I was wondering about the IQ of the 105 micro at LONG distances such as infinity. In other words, would it be as good as the f2.5 as an all-around lens? I know it would be better than the 2.5 for close-ups.

Nice shots BTW.

John, as you have 2 (or 3?) 16/3.5 copies I surely would like an extra 800/5.6, my most beloved lens, but the big problem is the cost
Who knows after a couple of years and IF the 800/5.6 VR drops one thousand dollars in price, these MF beauties can drop some hundreds or one thousand dollars too
I have to respectfully disagree with Peter B about MFocusing these 800/5.6 ais, since I have had no problem at all:
after I calibrated the grren dot focusing indicator for the camera/lens combination, I have had proper focusing on most shots; for example

Jose,

I understand that it is possible to use focus assist on those lenses today, but when I shot long glass last, the best camera on the planet was the EOS 1-n and it had no such dot support on f8 or higher. It also didn't have a viewfinder bright enough for critical focus of such long and dark lenses. On top of that, the 2x converter on the 600mm sucked, so starting out with a 5.6 that will be f8 with just a 1.4x has me somewhat worried, and I am not even thinking about the narrow field of view being just too narrow for what I have been doing. 300mm works fine at times, 420mm works very well, and 600 is perfect. 840 is already special purpose for motorsports.

Your comments about focus being "easy" with those lenses does sound promising, though. More reasons for me to skip the far more expensive AF versions of long Nikkors. Still on the fence, but it's a $3000 difference on that fence. If I was shooting for news use, AF would be imperative, but I want to use the lens for the artists view type work, and MF will most likely deliver 90% of the time.

Peter

Thanks Leighton.
If I understood you correctly, I think these tests of 105/2.5 (Gauss) vs. 105/2.8 Micro can be useful to you.

At infinity they are similar or perhaps the Micro is slightly better (!?!):

At close up distances the Micro is not surprisingly better:

I never used the "poor man" 105 micro (110/5.6) at infinity focus though.

Scott, Leighton, Georg, Jim and Peter, thanks for the comments on the Dune shot. Georg, you're right about the Spring and Summer crowds. Must be heaven's way of teaching us patience.

Peter, really nice plane shots. Love the SR-71.

Rafael, I enjoyed the Marine Band, the Hawaiian dancer and the flowers.

Leighton, I like #3. "Vendor Kid" is an excellent photo. Do you sell your prints at the market? I would think they'd be a big hit.

Georg, the b&w of the cruise ship interior with the 16mm is very cool.

Ray, love the Mr. Squirrel shot, and the flower below it is gorgeous.

Kevin, very nice macros.

John, excellent panos!

Peter, wonderful car shots. I love the style you used on the Austin Healeys. The Borgwards, and their story, are fascinating. The photo in the article "you were too good for this world" is a compelling image.

Ronny, very unique and beautiful flower shots with the 135mm.

Reagan, the composition and lighting of the seascape is very nice.

Curtis, love the red poppies! Good luck with the real estate hunting.

Jose, wonderful shots with the 55mm micro.

Leighton, sounds like a "real" farmers market. Our version sells more jewelry, tacos, dog and cat food, etc. than actual produce.

Just so that I'm on the same page with everything, this is the Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8 AI-s being compared (not the new AF lens)? Looks great at infinity!
