Very nice, Ronny ... really like the processing on this last one. I love this delicate look you get with some of the images you post. I think it works very well.

I was playing with a 200mm f/4 Nikkor-Q (AI'd) that was in a bag of lenses I bought recently.
It looks almost brand new, but I'll probably put it up for sale soon since I am already covered with that focal length, and more importantly, I need to recover some of the grocery money I spent buying them.

I also learned I can no longer hand hold long lenses at slow shutter speeds.

Larry

That's what manual mode is for. Modern DSLR cameras handle low light so well, that you can turn on Auto ISO, set the shutter speed where you find comfort, set aperture and let the camera solve the lighting problem. Between Auto ISO and the non-CPU register you're in good shape unless you really want to stop down. But these lenses tend to be sharp wide open so that's not a problem.

With regard to the 200 Q, Georg mentioned recently that he'd like to buy one. Perhaps you could work out something with him. I've sent quite a few lenses to Europe, South America and Australia using First Class International mail. Yes, I have to fill out a customs form, but that's not a big deal. Of course, you have to work out a method of payment. Paypal gift is not a bad way to go. Think about it Larry. If you really want to let that lens go, Georg might be very interested.

Very nice set Luc. You clearly have an eye for composition. First rate. And yes, creative post processing is always appreciated. I often say that half of the pleasure I take from photography is with camera in hand, the other half is when seated at the computer doing post processing. You're right, of course, you need to capture a quality image to produce a quality result. Judicious cropping can help sometimes but it is hard to salvage a badly out of focus image. We do what we can with the option to delete the image always present...

Thanks Curtis. Yeah, looks like it's working I am sure it's the lens because the D700 can do the same. I am going lighter and needed the video for now. Still hanging on to the D700 for a while to see if I truly can replace it.

I know I've mentioned George Lucas on this thread from time to time. Recently, he bought a building in the heart of downtown San Anselmo, tore it down and then donated it to the city for creation of a park. This spring has been a whirl of activity as the building came down and development of the park proceeded. This weekend is a street fair that comes to San Anselmo each year and the park was dedicated last Thursday. There was a contest to name the park and the winner is "Imagination Park." The major attraction of the new park is a fountain set back from the street with two bronze statues mounted atop a stone mass. One is a statue of Indiana Jones and the other a statue of Yoda from Star Wars. What struck me were two small plaques, one beneath each statue. The one below Yoda says "Star Wars Created in San Anselmo 1973." The other plaque said "Indiana Jones Created in San Anselmo 1974."

It was a shockingly bright day with too much color and commotion, so I converted these images in Silver Efex Pro 2. These were shot with the 135 f/2.8 Q.C. AI'd, wide open.

One color photo is in order. I noticed this flower hidden in shadows with a bit of filtered light catching my eye. Wide open with the 135 f/2.8 Q.C. AI'd. Love this lens...

Ronny:

Got the lens, tubes, and tripod. Ready to go! Any tips? For example, approximately how far away from the subject were you on these shots?

Thanks.

Great series. Looks like the D600 does just fine.

For best results Dave you'll want to experiment a bit. Ronny is hand holding these shots, if I'm not mistaken. The issue with tubes is that while they allow you to get closer to your subject, and thereby filling the frame with the object. the focal plane narrows and you lose infinity focus. That means you'll need to find a distance to the subject that allows the lens to find focus. Most often those using a tripod will have a focusing rail that allows the camera to move closer and farther back as you find focus. Shooting hand held in some ways is easier because you can rock back and forth, or lean closer and farther back to find focus.

This is one of the reasons AI lenses are attractive. They tend to have a longer focus throw, which increases the possibility you will gain focus simply by turning the focusing ring. Of course, we will always opt for the 180 with ED glass before the AI version that doesn't have that feature.

You'll find it useful to stop down and possibly shoot in manual mode to keep the shutter speed up. When I'm shooting with the much slower 300 f/4.5 AI-s ED-IF even in bright sunlight, I'm generally shooting manual mode and relying on Auto ISO to give me enough light.

Shooting with tubes is great fun, but it is something you really learn by doing. You might find the tripod less an advantage than a disadvantage for tubes, but you'll only know that by trying. Have fun!

Here's a shot with the 300 and a 36mm Vivitar tube attached...

Manual mode, 1/400th of a second, wide open, ISO 360

Thank you Eric, we absolutely loved the whole area, and will probably return if the opportunity arrives.

I thought about you Laura when I saw the news story about the plane crash. I figured you'd be at the air show in your home town. Great photos but definitely a tragic event. Wing walking seems dangerous enough but a plane crash did him and the pilot in. Really a shame.

300 f/2.8? Do you have a sherpa with you to carry the lens? That's five pounds of lens... but then you're carrying a book bag most days now, so perhaps it is not a problem. But I'll stick with the f/4.5 version that I can hand hold all day long without straining anything.

Happy shooting Laura...

I also heard the news about the crash. A very sad news, indeed.

I got a bit of time today so I decided to make modification to my TC-16A. It's working. Took with the 105mm f2.8 AIS Micro.
