Plenty of good work to be seen here everyone. now some of you have got me thinking about buying a file and scouting for some really old glass..... I really need to get out to shoot so that the GAS is subdued.

Waiting for my turn for flowers here ... should be soon.

The banyan tree originally from India is an amazing tree. As the branches grow the limbs expand downward to form roots. While the great redwood grow in height the banyan grows in width. A search on google has informed me that the largest one in the U.S. in right here in Florida. There were several at the Ringling Museum grounds.

Thanks for the lens porn Peter. I'd noted Bjorn's glowing review of the 50 f/2 long before picking up a copy of the 50 f/2 H.C. AI'd but then, like most folks I was mesmerized by the speed of the 50 f/1.2 and the low price of the 50 f/1.8, both of which are outstanding lenses as well. And more recently, I added the 50 f/1.4 S.C. AI'd to my kit. I have to say that Nikon has a stable of very fine lenses at 50mm even as they do at 55mm. Frankly, I don't think we can go wrong with any of them, but I'm definitely smitten by the older lenses design with scalloped rings and all metal construction. I'll also concede that it is better to file down the aperture ring and use these lenses than to not have them in our kit. So long as the lenses are handled with respect and care, all is well with the world. Glad you shared your experience and a few photos to demonstrate what the lenses are capable of doing... I'd say, great things.

Hey Ray... lenses that are too sharp can be handled more easily in digital post than in the good old days, so I think we're safe. But it is a testament to Nikon's technical ability to have created these lenses. With regard to any changes in how I compose flower images, all I can say is that it happens on its own without much thought on my behalf. I just move sliders and edges until I get what feels right. Every image is an experiment, which is, of course, one of the reasons post processing on a computer is so satisfying. Never a dull moment there.

I have to say your photos have always made Florida a more appealing place to me, though I doubt Sue and I will ever more there. Granted, I have much greater variety of subjects, but you keep showing us gorgeous gardens and interesting street scenes that would stir my creative juices were I in that environment. But I'd definitely need a few dozen long sleeve white shirts if I lived there...

do you use a filter or was the camera sensor filter IR converted? Exposure on the first shot looks too short to be done with a filter.

These are awesome! I love the K lenses, they are all so nice. Finding AI kits for them these days is super tough though...

I have that lens, but one of the elements rattles around loosely in the barrel probably should just mount it for giggles and see what happens

Butter rankamatuer up, he might be able to tighten it up for you... (I don't know if he does that for people, but I remember him doing a full CLA on a few of his lenses).

Another couple from the 135mm + tubes. Not sure I need to Ai this lens, I don't think I'll even take these tubes off it.

Last one of the full moon tonight (so called pink moon). There was a partial lunar eclipse tonight (emphasis on partial) - I think about 3% but still noticeable. Shot (despite the EXIF) with the 300mm 4.5 + TC201, not the sharpest combination but the longest reach I have. Guess I need to look for a 400 2.8 or 600 5.6 (and a new job to afford).

Too many pages wizzed by in a couple days! Nice capture of the mini-eclipse Mark! I see a bunch of folks have been busy filing down the pre-AI aperture rings. Despite having no experience or confidence at this kind of work, I am tempted to go look for a file and the right size screwdrivers.

I need to work out a dust bunny from the D800 sensor in the meanwhile. Is there a particular method/fluid people here use? The rocket blower is not cutting it on this spot.

Thanks John, Scott and Peter.

Ray and Curtis, classy flower shots, as usual;

John, as usual excellent landscapes with t he 400/5.6;

Peter, loved the "lens porn" and the sample shots;

Chuong, nice IR images; have you played with WB and/or curves settings or is this just straight out of the camera?

Kevin, good luck with the ai conversions. The critical step is to know where exacly file off at the left of aperture ring - the table at Pindelski site is the key for that;

Mark, great debut with the 135mm (f/3.5?). Is you new lens the scalloped version? Q or Q.C?

About the Marcus Aurelius Column:

Mihai, the "guy" at the top is Saint Paul.

John, I did not kwon if there is a site with the whole set of images. What I know from the book of Martin Beckmann about the column is that in 1896 a book with photographs of the entire bas-releif sequences was published:
Petersen, E., A. von Domaszewski, and G. Calderini. 1896. Die Marcus-Säule auf Piazza Colonna in Rom. Munich. Unfortunately very difficult to obtain.

One thing is certain: next time at Rome I definitively will reserve one whole day to shot sistematically both columns from at least six different positions: N, NE, NW, S, SE and SW!

Samy, Google "Copperhill Method"... I used that on my D7000 when it spit oil onto the sensor like it had a constant cold. Worked perfectly for me. Just be careful, follow their steps exactly.

I did one better. I found pics of my lenses already converted to use as a guide. Just need to find a good file. I do have a Dremel, auger bits and a drill press stand. That is how most of the guys that offer this as a service do it, might just do it that way. I have a beater lens to try on, so I am good to go I think.

Just found out I get to shoot some film this weekend! Haven't shot film since 1989! Shame it will most likely be on my old Pentax P3, seems my Nikon FG is totally dead.
