vestige of the past - a border police watchtower from the old GDR ("East-Germany")

I grew up 20km west of those things - rarely ventured there in those days when these things were still active, but it was always looming over the horizon. Gloomy years.

I'll use the above as a segue to some images from a simlar place with equally dark history - Manzanar, where I stopped for an hour last week, because the weather was too nasty to go skiing or climb any mountains.

Great shots! Question... Why f/22? Infinity would have its minimum distance of 20 feet or so. Just curious.

I set up a bid for this 200 f/4 Q.C. AI'd lens two times, deleting it each time. But in the end you prevailed and my last my last minute bid was just high enough to pick up this beauty that has the Nikon AI conversion kit installed. $75 did not seem too high a price to pay. Yes, it is ridiculous for me to buy another lens, but like Reagan I don't have anything else to do. The difference of course, is when I'm bored I buy a lens and when he's bored he SELLS a

Just received the ai kit#51 ($12 on the Bay) and......it is the wrong one, now looking for a second version 200mm Q with flat screws on the back.

Anyone have a #50 ai kit laying around?

I have non-ai lenses because I used to use them on non-ai cameras. But I have accumulated 6 or 8 conversion kits I don't have lenses for.

Is that a 200-600 f/9 I see in that group? That's an impressive collection.

I may have told this story before but at one time in my long, storied career, I was a management trainee with Ford Motor Company woking out of the Twin Cities Assembly plant where I was a cost analyst. I'd owned three Corvettes by that time in my life and although I didn't own one at the time, I lived with three friends, all of whom were driving Corvettes. I made a comment about them and my boss, the plant controller said "what's the big deal?" We were working a half day on Saturday at the time and I asked

I know the feeling of the adrenaline rush. In 1989 I bought a secondhand Porsche 928 ( the front engined V8 model) and once or twice took it up to just under 250 kph - about 150 mph - which is exhilirating indeed. The strange thing though was that at about 200 kph the cars you're passing seem to be coming AT you instead of the other way round. Sadly, perhaps for the best, it was stolen in 1990!

Scott - That 105 f4 micro lens is amazingly sharp - love the detail. Thnks for the comment.

Curtis - the roses are spectacularly sharp. It makes me wonder if perhaps some of the pre ai lenses aren't a tad better built than their replacements? These are two of the best separated images I've seen - as good as the 50 1.2.

The later roses with the 180 are also beautiful

Ron - great clarity on the Caterpillar. And I agree with you on worn lenses having been loved.

Ian - I like the colour portraits. Nothing wrong with your 50mm.

Reagan - thanks (on behalf of both Peter's - I'll take credit for Peter B's photos any time )

Jeff - thanks and I'll be thinking about you tomorrow.

Jose - thanks for the comment. You've convinced me to look for a 200 Q - there's nothing to choose.

Georg - thanks. Very nice series indeed.

Jorge - impressive colour and focus.

Peter B - wonderful images of a sad place. It makes one realise how easily we humans generalise about those who aren't like us - in WWll it was "the Jews, the Krauts, the Japs, in SA it was "the Blacks", today it's "the Settlers", in Vietnam "the Gooks" now it's "the Ragheads". As history unfolds we find that whole groups who were tarred with the same brush turn out to be individuals with the same hopes and fears as the rest of us. The problem is that we don't seem to be able to get away from taking refuge in our tribal roots despite better education.

Ray - I love the door and the pump.

I know Jose... I'm just afraid that Leighton will turn around and blame me since I was the one promoting that lens many moons ago before he picked up his copy. Leighton does a wonderful job of demonstrating its abilities, however, so he's a fine person to blame... I used the lens briefly but soon moved on to another lens... I've been known to do that...

Curtis, I won't blame you but even if you did persuade me I'm glad you did!

What else can be said about this lens!

Great flower shots from you and Jose.
