Spring Flowers blooming in the desert.

The two white cactus flowers bloom on a neighbors plant by his front sidewalk. The flowers are 6 inches across and only bloom for 6 hours, opening by 8 a.m. and done by 2 p.m. I obtained these shots at 9 a.m. yesterday and when I decided to go back at 2 p.m. for a change in light they were done. Till next year.

WOW, stunning cactus flowers DD! Well done.

Thanks Jeff, Ronny, Ray, Georg, Samy and Scott for the comments.

Peter, loved the Bulbul + Eugenia set, mostly the 1rst and 3rd images;

Leighton, beautiful tulips capture;

Samy, Jeff and Kevin, more excellent flower images from you;

Scott, loved your B&W conversion of the "old building";

Rafael, impressive sets with the 55/1.2, 8/2.8 and 16/3.5 - your PP is also spetacular;

Mihai, loved your "cultural event" set, rich colours and beautiful bokehs.

As I promised to Curtis, next are some simple but more controlled tests on the old (QC) vs. newer (AIS) 200mm f/4 lenses. Sorry in advance for those that are boring to death with these, but can be useful to some here.

Lets begin with the close up range. I suppose there are virtually no differences using tube or the 3T close up lens. IMO the only visible difference is a slight but visible focus breathing from the newer design!
Perhaps the newer ais is slightly, slightly contrastier.

Test of the old 200mm Nikkor: QC (ai'd) vs. newer AIS at close up range.
An Alaskan miniature sculpture of an owl, just 57mm in height.
Live view for best possible focus - focus was at the left eye of the owl. No PP, just conversion at View NX 2.7 and resizing in CS5.

PN-11 tube:

Nikkors 200mm f/4: Q.C vc AI-S wide open with PN-11 tube by labecoaves, on Flickr

D600 + PN-11 tube (52.5mm) + tripod + remote shutter cable, ISO 200 ~1.10m of distance.
The newer lens has a slight but visible focus breathing!!
Is the bokeh of the older QC version slightly, slightly smoother

~100% crop (PN-11 tube):

Nikkors 200mm f/4: Q.C vc AI-S wide open with PN-11 tube: 100% crops by labecoaves, on Flickr

With 3T close up lens:

Nikkors 200mm f/4: Q.C vc AI-S wide open with 3T close-up lens by labecoaves, on Flickr

D600 + 3T close up lens (1.5 diopters) + tripod + remote shutter cable, ISO 200 ~0.82m of distance. The newer lens has a visible focus breathing!!

~100% crop (3T lens):

Nikkors 200mm f/4: Q.C vc AI-S wide open with 3T close-up lens: 100% crops by labecoaves, on Flickr

I think results are not bad for an old design (original design ~1959-61) of just 4 elements/4 groups vs. the newer 5/5 design (~1974-75).

Thank you Peter and Jose for the comments on the old building. Yes Peter, it is located in downtown Rochester. If my history memory serves me right, it was first built four stories in height. Then they just keep adding floors as time went on. It is very nice on the inside but was locked when I was there.

Jose, thank you for the 200 f4 comparisons. It is nice to see these.

Great photos everyone, I have spent the last week trimming trees and bushes getting ready for Hurricane season that starts June 1. No I am not doing it too early. Just "Tryin to Reason with Hurricane Season"
Next week I will be on the roof checking edges for loose shingles
I am getting too old for this

I'm just starting to organize 1300 new images taken in the last two weeks. Many with MF glass.

This set all 300mm f4.5 EDIF on D600, all somewhere along US6 in Nevada

I surrender Jose...

I set up a bid for this 200 f/4 Q.C. AI'd lens two times, deleting it each time. But in the end you prevailed and my last my last minute bid was just high enough to pick up this beauty that has the Nikon AI conversion kit installed. $75 did not seem too high a price to pay. Yes, it is ridiculous for me to buy another lens, but like Reagan I don't have anything else to do. The difference of course, is when I'm bored I buy a lens and when he's bored he SELLS a lens...

Your PP is so good too! Did you use some tonal contrast trick?

Yes Jose, Nik's tonal contrast built into NX2. Firs I flatten the contrast out in quick fix, then apply different measures of Nik's tonal contrast depending on my mood of the day.

Time to show the people in Balboa park for earth day, not too many hippies, not sure where the ones from my Berkeley days went.

The crowd was prosperous and young! none of us experienced fellows there. There was a lot of religious people with signs, and pro life demonstrators as well. I will stay away from political or religious commentary, but the event was overwhelmed by this and seemed not to be so able to focus on conservation and the environment.

Mihai - what a great series. Glad you're back sharing with us.

Jose - excellent comparison. I prefer the older Q lens as it seems a touch sharper to my eye.

Ron - looks like decent weather at last. This is the time for Longwood Gardens - I remember from 2005 just after my son's wedding on 4/16!

Peter B - just a terrific series and I love the 1st wind farm and the cactus.

Curtis - hoist by your own petard! Great buy. Good hunting with the new weapon.

John - lovely girls. You are going to have your hands full beating off suitors, for sure.

Rafael - excellent photos that show our world in all it's confusion. In El Cid's day it was much more straightforward....

Hi Peter,
Stunning work, love the focus stack...well and pretty much all of them. great contrast of styles with the long empty highway with the 300mm vs the burnt out sign.
