Thank you, Dean!
Basically I think on a really good day I could do well with MF-glass only for rugby and soccer. But I would never get as much keepers as with AF-glass.
As a side-note: for sports I prefer the well dampened and super-smooth focusing-mechanism of the longer non-IF lenses (135/2Ais, 180/2.8ED) over the focusing-mechanism of the 300/4.5 IF-ED by a wide margin.
On rugby: soccer is king and queen in one person here, handball and volleyball are really popular too. Ice-hockey and basketball have a good following. American football and rugby are fringe sports, the same goes for baseball, lacrosse and such.
Some more action from today:

D3s and 180/2.8ED at f/4, this one will not make it into the paper (the ball is missing ;-)

Tried my new 45PCE at a (benefit-) basket-ball-match this evening:

shame on me, I couldn't resist to try the infamous miniature-effect (D7000 at ISO3200, 45PCE wide open)

a flying German: nice entertainment during the halftime-break (D7k, 45PCE wide open too)

Since we are on topic ... I too love shooting sports but usually with AF-S lenses, but sometimes take a "guest" MF Nikkor along

Dean, thanks! Your shots are great, the timing on #2 couldn't be better (my timing was never really good in 20 years of shooting sports). You did good to put your focus on the lady ;-)

I love it! We have Hong Kong, Germany and Sweden all chatting... Of course, it is well past Georg's bedtime, so he'll be gone soon.

So many great photos I tip my hat to all of you. My 135 f/2.8 K AI'd arrived yesterday but the post office wouldn't deliver it because I wasn't home. That was very fast delivery from Japan, but apparently they want some assurance the lens they sold will arrive in the buyer's hands. So Monday I'll stop by the post office and pick it up.

In the meantime I'll tip my hat to Jose for his fine work with the 135 f/2.8 Q.C. AI'd. This is a surprisingly good lens Jose, another of the purchases I made because of your guidance. The K has the same optical design and the same weighty body, though it has the rubber focusing ring found on later AI and AI-s lenses. The Q.C. doesn't have the scalloped focusing ring I've been so enjoying on other pre-AI lenses. I love it nonetheless. We'll see whether the K displaces the Q.C.. My guess is one of them will go... though I'm not generally one to sell lenses.

More will be revealed.

Pity you can't share the images here though. I always thought it would be nice to have a "Manual Focus Nikon Glass Temporary Refugee" thread

You know, quite a few folks from this thread have made their presence known in the Macro World forum on the thread I started called Shooting With Tubes which has become the longest thread on that forum. Ronny posts his Zeiss work with tubes on that thread, and his Nikkor wok with tubes both there and here. I don't see any reason you wouldn't have success with a thread in the Alternative Gear forum with exactly that title. You could shoot with Zeiss glass, Voigtlander glass and anything else that strikes your fancy and fits on a Nikon camera. Yes, there are a number of Zeiss thread, but no reason not to focus on Nikon cameras with alternative gear. All it takes is someone willing to keep rowing the boat down the stream. Needless to say, it would best for someone who uses Zeiss or other alternative glass on their Nikon camera AND who loves to talk... I'm proved that is required...

Maybe our somnolent friend Ben can be persuaded to wake up long enough to get the thread started. My guess is that both Ronny and Philippe would join in, perhaps a few others. I'd certainly check out the thread and offer a bit of encouragement. I'll just have to restrain myself from making that first Zeiss purchase since we all know that when i get started I have a very hard time stopping...

Curtis, thanks for the friendly reminder - it's late here indeed, time to go to bed
Here's an image from todays sunset I can't process to my liking, it's the third version, maybe I'll give it another try tomorrow:

45PC-E wide open, D3s, cropped a bit, hate the outline of the trees in the background (I just don't wanna run a blur-filter over it)

World War II air show and reenactment in the little town of Reading in eastern Pennsylvania; less than two hours away and I had never heard of it until this year. Lots of pictures but it was very interesting to know that the B-29 in action there is the only one left that can fly. Here's a pic of it taking off. Used the 300 4.5 AIS for the planes in aerial action.

Great shot with the 300mm - looks quite period with the lack of modern surroundings

My 300mm f/4.5 EDIF met FiFi last summer at the Oshkosh air show - I just re-edited a few of those this weekend in CS6 (and that engine photo a few pages ago was also a B29 engine)

Here's FiFi in Oshkosh - never really got close to it, though, and had to do a lot of editing to remove neon green cones and other modern gizmos on the first one. All on the D7000

Terrific photos Peter. It seems the 300 AIS is a common choice among manual lens shooters headed to an air show I thought 400 5.6 first, but that gets too close for too many shots if one hangs around right at the fence. After Fifi landed and parked, I headed over to see if I could get a close up but the roped area around it was very large.

Jose, terrific star field in that photo with the 50 1.2. Interesting observation about the 50. I have read that the 28s are also very good at controlling coma. And unless you take shorter exposures and stack the photos, there is a general limit before you start getting the star trails. Wide angles will allow a bit more time span before the trails start lengthening.

Ronny, great work as always, this time with pesky bugs.

Georg, super rugby and basketball work, and especially the flying German!

Dean, nice soccer (football) images.

Incredible activity and pictures everyone.

I am not one for Macro or Panoramas, but the ones here are great!

Will stick with the usual like using the 55 1.2 SC to photograph a pretty girl with an ouchie in her nose. All at 1.2
