Thanks Peter. Remarkably, the very bright light mediated by extension tubes and spot metering, can create some delicious results. All I have to do is hold the camera steady... Yes, it helps to have sharp glass, but then that is what all of us are using. Nikon has served us well.

This one was tricky because the dark rose shot with spot metering messed with exposure. I had to step back from a seriously over-exposed image. (2 and a half stops, to be exact.) The D700 did not fail, nor did Lightroom. This was shot with the 300 and PK-13 at 1/250th of a second, hand held, of course. It is a crop.

Hello Peter, I took a look at the photo samples that you posted, those look really good to me. I think I am not getting as sharp image because I am using a D800E. 36.3 megapixel resolution will probably out render this lens! I recently got rid of a Nikon 80 200 mm f/2.8D lens because it was not good enough for the D800E, I never really got sharp images from that lens because it could not produce good sharpness at that resolution. So far I can hold the camera and lens just fine as long as I use

Hi Todd - It could be that the D800E outrenders the lens but it would probably be impossible to see on a computer screen. I think it would be a good idea to mount it on a tripod and to take pics at at least 1/1000 second - 640 is probably a bit slow. As I mentioned earlier focus is critical with this lens despite the f8 aperture. Also the subject can't be too far away or haze could affect the IQ. Look forward to your images.

Peter

And your other set was very nice too, great use of the 16mm and it reminds me that I am in Nova Scotia this summer, I have to remember to plan a trip to the spot my wife and I got married while we are there. The 45mm seems to be doing very nicely with you.

For a farmer that's the day a year when Sheep aren't lambing, earth doesn't need ploughing, seeds don't need sowing, hens need feeding, eggs need collecting, pigs need swilling, wheat doesn't need reaping, fruit doesn't need plucking, fields don't need fertalising, crows don't need scaring and farmers markets don't need managing.
Vacation.

Wow. Too bad you couldn't share. Ninety days to move isn't that long, and for that kind of uprooting, it's even worse. Moving to FL in mid-summer would not be kind to either of you. UGH.

Curtis, Terrific shots with the 300mm + PK-13! Color, exposure and sharpness of your flowers are most impressive for handheld, especially considering the focal length / magnification. You're inspiring me to try out my 200mm Micro (AF, so no-go for this thread) handheld this weekend (I just don't have enough hands to carry a tripod these days. )

Peter and Samy, Thanks for the comments!

Mike

Thanks Mike. Make certain you have a few of your MF lenses with you so you can take a few photos to drop on the thread. And don't forget, the 105 f/2.5 AI-s with a PK-13 attached is outstanding for getting close to flowers. Here's an old flower photo taken with the 105 and a 20mm extension tube carrying a Vivitar label.

A few of the folks on this thread have, of late, been sharing some of their work at another thread I started titled Shooting with Tubes that can be found in the Macro World forum. Tubes are great fun with all of these MF lenses.

Enjoy your shooting Mike. I'm glad you found us.

That's only fair, since I've been trying to "borrow" your flower photo style for quite awhile.

Thanks Ray and to everyone for the well wishes on the eye procedures.

I managed to detach a retina about 10 years ago and a complication from that was giving me a not-so-pleasing "bokeh" in my left eye. I'm very fortunate to live 20 minutes away from a top flight university eye clinic and the specialists there are doing a great job getting this sorted out. The first surgery involved work on the retina and the advances in surgical technique over the past decade are pretty amazing. The work was done under local anesthesia through two probes the size of flu shot needles. A second procedure last week was to take care of an early cataract in the same eye. Next is a procedure to balance the right eye which will, hopefully, be the end of the story.

In the meantime, I've been wearing a patch, la Mark, and not shooting too much. I did go out for a little photo hike yesterday using a new type of lens that Nikon developed that will actually focus for you. A neat trick, but I doubt it will catch on.

I'm planning to be back soon, taking proper photos with my Nikkor MF lenses. Thanks again for the good wishes!

You got me Leighton... but just remember, old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill...

Sue is as committed to where we live as I am, so I don't think Florida will ever be more than the fallback against homelessness... The place we saw yesterday was pretty pathetic for $1,300 a month so the search continues. We both know, however, that renting always leaves one at risk. Ownership has its challenges, but if one can make the monthly payments, pay the taxes and insurance, no one is going to evict you.

More will be revealed, though you and Laura are right, Florida in the summertime holds NO appeal.
