Wish I had selectable raw resolution on the D800, its photos blow me away. The D3 is excellent but the D800 just adds a whole new dimension, just don't want it all the time.

Will give you a rest from testing, I am happy with the 55mm 1.2 SC. The Carlsbad flower fileds are open, here is a few shots with the D800, 55mm and the 15mm 5.6. This last lens does not need to be focused in most this type of photo, its field curvature will bring the whole flower field in focus.

It is the one on the left here:

What great colour !! That must have been so much fun to photograph.

A quick followup from my PanSTARRS images. Here's a link to an AVI file created from a series of still images.

Also the same thing in an animated .gif form (too bad about the 8 bit color . . .)

That is super cool, John !!

How many still images?

Thanks for all the beer comments!

Dean - I agree with you the M9 is the best of the bunch. My D70 ALWAYS blew highlights. I kept it on -0.3 or 0.7 all the time which seemed to help. I also used spot metering when it was a high dynamic scene. This sort of thing can be VERY frustrating. I would do a little more research, it could be that your meter is off and needs to go into Nikon for an adjustment.

You may be right, Leighton ... meter might be off but it doesn't happen all the time, which is why I believe Thom Hogan's theory is correct in my case. I can sympathise with D70 issues as I had a D80 which was terrible too.

Anyway ... no big deal ... I'll end up with some Nikon body to mount these beauties on

Rafael, the flower beds look like a treat to photograph, and I bet they fill the senses just being around them.

John, thanks for the comet sequence. Way cool, really love the way you captured and presented the night sky sequence.

Thanks everyone regarding the comet sequence. I should also say that it was done with the 135/2 AIS wide open. 15 frames I believe. I should have had twice as many frames at half the interval time, but sometimes it's tough to figure this stuff out on the fly in the field.

That's a lovely series Paul, as for the last, wow, I wouldn't have dared to make a 12-stitch pano at a live band concert

Thanks Dean. If you could, tell your friend Robert that's marvelous work.
I don't venture out often, not particularly keen on the city and crowds but did so because Anton was in town
And it was a pretty inspiring show, 10mins of lights and now I'm planning for night shots (8pm!) around the area, with the 'crown' as the focus

Oh and have you considered sending the D800e around the world? First the lens, now the body!

Now THAT would be an adventure I'd participate in... What about it Dean? If you're not happy with the camera we can "break it in" for you...

Sorry for the long Pano. This is a 10 shot pano of Lago Garda shot from the trail to an old Franciscan hermitage in the cliffs above a town called Gargnano. One of the few sunny days we had, most of the time it was grey with very flat light.
Shot with the 75-150mm at 75mm.

Willing to go back there again to see how good it looks with Deans D800E..

New (old) Lens Poll:

Need some sage advice re a used (EX+, LN-) lens acquisition, based upon some credit I have with KEH. I know the dreaded AF is involved, but so is a MF lens, so help me out!

Choice 1: an EX+ Nikon 24-70 2.8G ED

Choice 2: a LN- Tamron 24-70 2.8 Di VC USD AND a EX- Nikon 135 2 AI-s

To accommodate Choice 2 I would have to sell them my 135 2.8 AI-s. OK by me, as I don't need 2 mf lenses in that focal length.

The Nikon is well, be best available now for Nikon. The Tamron is pretty good, and has the advantage of vibration control. The 135 2 AI-s you know about.

What do you think? I have no problem with non-Nikon lenses if they are good. My 2 Rokinons are extremely good. On the other hand, I doubt that I have used the 135 twice since I acquired it. Do I need to upgrade it?

Help!

Well if you really "need" the AF lens, I'd pick number 2, just because it has the 135mm f2. Then I'd sell the Tamron and get the 85mm f1.4 AI-s along with the 180mm f2.8 AI-s ED. Remember, you did ask.

Hah! Already have the 180mm! Got the Rokinons for 35 and 85 (MF, just not Nikon MF). Actually, I am leaning towards Choice 2 as well. They are holding those for me...

I got my new Black Rapid camera strap and I love it. Walked around all afternoon at the birthday party and felt no strain whatsoever. Very comfortable! It felt secure and always ready whenever a photo op presented itself.

The Photobucket link is broken, since their site is badly broken too since their "upgrades". I may be rethinking their service... I had a nice panorama that isn't displaying properly...

While shooting the panorama that needs a new home, I had a flyover as well, so that shot is over here since it was with an AF Lens

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/600984/3645#11471264

And lastly, both of these shot with the 105 f/2.5 AI-S

I just bought a new backup desktop hard drive. Costco has Seagate 4TB drives for $169. They also come in 1 and 2 GB models.

Quite a buy....that should last a few years. D3 User here with 300 GB in pics.
