I'm trying to find a lens to get my girlfriend some more range, since all she has is the kit 18-55 and a 50 1.8 that I got her. I don't really like the Canon consumer zooms (75-300, 55-250) that much, so I was looking for a better option. I came across the 70-210 f4 and was hoping it would be like its Nikon equivalent in quality and "sleeper" factor. Anybody have any experience with this lens? I'd love to just grab her the 70-200 f4L, but thats a bit too much for my broke college self. Thanks.
Justin
The 70-210 f/4 was my first Canon tele-zoom. I used with a 10D and, subsequently, a 40D. You don't say which camera the lens is going to be used with, but for all intents and purposes, this is a stellar performer on crop cameras of 10MP or less. As you go higher in resolution ... and as you approach 5D quality ... the lens' shortcomings begin to make themselves known. Something to keep in mind. The AF is also pretty scratchy sounding, as is the manual focus control.
In addition to the other low-cost bargains that have been suggested, I'd add the Tamron 55-200. I use that lens with my Fuji S2 Pro and also used with my Nikon D2x and Nikon D200. Excellent lens. Excellent value. Highly recommended.
