p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Canon EF 70-210 f4

I had one for years. I was pleased when I used it on my Kodak DCS-520 and 560, and Canon D60 and 20D. I put off buying a 70-200 F2.8 for years because of that lens. But when I got a 1DsII, I had a hard time getting sharp images from it. Sold it and I am pretty sure the person is still using it.

I'm trying to find a lens to get my girlfriend some more range, since all she has is the kit 18-55 and a 50 1.8 that I got her. I don't really like the Canon consumer zooms (75-300, 55-250) that much, so I was looking for a better option. I came across the 70-210 f4 and was hoping it would be like its Nikon equivalent in quality and "sleeper" factor. Anybody have any experience with this lens? I'd love to just grab her the 70-200 f4L, but thats a bit too much for my broke college self. Thanks.
Justin

The 70-210 f/4 was my first Canon tele-zoom. I used with a 10D and, subsequently, a 40D. You don't say which camera the lens is going to be used with, but for all intents and purposes, this is a stellar performer on crop cameras of 10MP or less. As you go higher in resolution ... and as you approach 5D quality ... the lens' shortcomings begin to make themselves known. Something to keep in mind. The AF is also pretty scratchy sounding, as is the manual focus control.

In addition to the other low-cost bargains that have been suggested, I'd add the Tamron 55-200. I use that lens with my Fuji S2 Pro and also used with my Nikon D2x and Nikon D200. Excellent lens. Excellent value. Highly recommended.

The 70-210/3.5-4.5 is a much better lens and has very fast USM AF, the 100-300L (which I used to own) has pretty slow and noisy non-USM focus, not to mention it's slower glass and a much older design. They are very different lenses. I would recommend you pick the variable aperture 70-210, especially over the 55-250, which has some pretty mediocre reviews.

How slow is slow and how noisy is noisy? Are you talking about the same speed/sound as the 50 f/1.8? Louder? Quieter?

As an aside, the 55-250 is a fine lens for the price.
