Looks terrific with the clouds above the mountains!

Nice shots around SD Gary. I live here so it is good to see some shots around these parts.

I finally picked up the Leica. After shooting with Canon bests, I can say I have no regrets on the switch. All shots with M and 50 Lux:

Looks freezing, I'm glad your M9 is holding up well

Kpsingh0, the 50 sonnar is an amazing lens but if money isn't an issue I'd go for the pre asph. Just remember they have different MFD and this may be a deal breaker for you. The Jupiter 3 is also a very good contender with similar rendering to the 50 sonnar if you can find a good copy.

Call me crazy but I would actually recommend you try out the Canon 50mm f/1.4. I really like the 50lux pre-asph but find that the Canon is quite close in performance - just a little less "glowy". As Rocky said, if price is no object, go for the lux. If money is a factor, $350 can get you a super lens.

The Jupiter seems interesting but how does one find a good copy?

Everyone knows I'm a Zeiss fanatic, but the C-Sonnar is one of the lenses that didn't work for me. The rendering is fantastic and the sharpness very good from wide open (with accurate focus evidently). The 90 cm MFD is offset by the slightly longer FL (it is really a 55-58mm) so it doesn't bother much. However, used on an RF body, the focus shift limits the usage of this lens considerably. Provided it is calibrated for best focus wide open (as my copy was), you are limited to use it either wide open or at f/5.6 upwards. Anything in between is soft due to missed focus. However, it should work very well on a mirrorless cam, and in fact I plan to re-buy one when I have a proper FF mirrorless body.

From my neighborhood. Sunset in the midst of the San Diego fires. These are not clouds in the sky but all smoke from the fires. Air quality is getting pretty bad and it is not looking good with more fires starting.

6 shot panorama.

If I were you I'd find a reputable dealer or buy one locally. Jason Howe did a nice article on this lens and from what I remember he recommended a site for buying vintage Russian lenses.

Okay, tell me what you think guys. I've gone through my over-stocked inventory of lenses and think that it's time for a sell-off so that I can fund the 50 lux asph.

If I sell:
CV 28 1.9
CV 35 1.2
CV 50 1.5
CV 75 1.8
AND an entire stocked bin of MF film along with *maybe* my Bronica ETRS with 3 PE lenses (50, 75 and 105)
I should come close to being okay with getting the 50 lux asph.

I would be keeping my CV 21 1.8 and my 25mm (to use on the R4A) and already have 35mm covered by Fuji (x100). From what I've read and seen, the 50 lux is an almost necessity and I wouldn't miss the 50 or the 75 CV lenses. I'm iffy on the 35, as I really like that lens, but suppose I could purchase another 35 down the road if I wanted to. This lets me continue to shoot film in 35mm format (for which I have the R4A, two minoltas, an underwater Nikonos and tons of odd point and shoots). I haven't shot MF film in quite some time, and never really preferred it much over 35mm anyway...

What would you do?

I'm generally not a fan of Leica rendering, except their recent designs that try to emulate the Zeiss look, very successfully I have to admit.

But if you're really keen on the Lux, I think that absolutely you won't need the CV 50 and 75 (the latter is a weak lens anyway). You will probably end up getting the 35 Lux or the 28 Cron, once you start getting into Leica glass, so selling the CV 35 and 28 will only accelerate the process

Hi, Katie, 50lux ASPH can be got around as low as $2800 if you are patient. you might not need sell all those lens

I am not fan of VC50 and VC75 for sure. I liked Zeiss Sonnar though. I feel I can leave with it if I have to. 50Cron is a very good/safe option as well. but I have to say 50lux ASPH is a pretty safe investment now I prefer to having best lens on key focal than coverage, so I encourage you to get the 50lux if you feel it render to your like.

sell the Fuji, the bronica, the R4A and all the CV lenses except the 21/2.8 and 35/1.2, and get the Lux and an M3 as a film body.

...

well, you did ask what I would do

Sounds like a plan, I think you'll really enjoy the lux asph especially if you're a 50mm lover. It has an exquisite modern rendering. The CV 1.2 is a great lens but if you're happy with the x100 then it shouldn't be a problem to let go. Beware you might end up lusting for a 35 lux after you get the 50 lux :P

By the way guys, I thought you would be interested to know that Kipon is making extension tubes for M lenses on M240 bodies. Just ordered one on the bay.

Interesting Edward. What do you plan on shooting with the tubes?
