So, now I am at a crossroads: an M9 I bought from this forum back in Jul13 had a known issue with its SD card interface. I could not fix that, but Leica AG came to the party and have fixed it free of charge - outstanding customer support ( was 2nd or 3rd hand and not under warranty). I will get the cam next week and apparently it will have a brand new sensor/rear screen/SD card assembly. I wonder will it have sapphire-glass?

The crossroads is whether I sell that, keep my M8 and buy the A7R that's calling to

Hi David,
Leica service on average has been very good, other than the unfortunate issues with Edward, which are totally unacceptable. Keep the M9, as it is a FF, and great camera. The M9 is easily serviced by local repair centers if the RF is bumped out of calibration, unlike the M240's which need to be sent back to Solms.

I have the M240's for traveling and I usually only take a few lenses with me to keep the weight down, and keep my vision simple. My lens inventory is the 21 SEM, 24 Lux, 28 Cron, 35 Lux FLE, 50 Lux Asph, 50 Cron Rigid DR, 50 Nocti f/1.0, 75 Lux, 75 Cron AA and 90 Cron AA.

I have invested in M glass over last 3 years, selling off all my DSLR's and other cams.

I now have the A7r's, and at first I was frustrated with some of the ergonomics, but I can say now the detail and DR are amazing. The A7r is a perfect companion to the M240, and I may end up selling one of my M240's, but still keeping my M glass.

I hear what uhoh is saying, but I am a 50mm FL shooter, and don't often use WA's below 24mm, so the A7r is better suited in my case. From the above lens inventory, the only lenses that do not work with the A7r are, 21 SEM, 28 Cron Asph and 50 Lux Asph. All of the other lenses work brilliantly, and I have now fine tuned the technique in using the 50 Nocti f/1.0 with the A7r, and just use focus peaking set to high, and the near eye for portraits is focused correctly now about 95%. Even with the M240 with increased resolution, I have been resorting to the EVF with the fast lenses, as there is some focus shift at different f stops. For most of the Crons lenses, except the 90 Cron AA, the RF is quicker to focus.

The other point to note while traveling, the A7r body is easily replaced, as most overseas stores have stock. With insurance, the cusp of replacing a 2K body as versus a 8K body is a lot more palatable.

I am so pleased now that there is another option, of having a backup.

Good luck

Today I was using the CV 21/4

I was quite the Leicaphile , making up for the minmialist CV 21, with a M8 grip which showed up today, my Frankenfinder, Thumbsup, Red art and artistsan strap and a "best red soft release".

The luigi half case stayed at home, waiting for its Barton1972 Braided strap to show

My latest rationalization: Hey the whole kit is cheaper than a new motorcycle!

Katie - love those B&W images you've just posted!

Can't comment on Flickr-ed pics from this computer, but will in due course.

I really want to see your CV21/4 pics Charlie (uhoh7) as I have the same lens. I also have the CV35/1.4 Nokton (MC) - we have beer budgets and champagne tastes! One last thing - I have 2 types of TU, but prefer the 'feel and protection' from my own Luigi half-case ... "safe photography" if you like

Charles - thanks so much for all of your summary of experience with your A7R and M9...M240...lenses.

My M9 will arrive with me on Tue next, all being well. I look fwd to using it. My concern with ownership remains the sensor integrity into the future, not the RF calibration/maintenance.

Seems pretty good to me, though I'm sure the SEL and Zeiss etc are technically better. Nothing is smaller, right?

Let's put it this way: better than ANY 21 on the A7r However I suspect the natives are restless on that front.

Seriously, I'm still learning to use it with M9. What are the best stops, where to put the focus etc. Some shots seem to smear, but then I remember I backed away from infinity, for example:

L1001003 by unoh7, on Flickr

Even the tree begins to soften near the top, but I was well back from infinity at f/11 I think. Center frame POF is wicked sharp.

I'm sure everyone knows if you click on file name you can get to original.

One thing I really notice with M9 is intense contrast. Nearly alway's I'm pushing the blacks just to see any detail. And the push is very limited compared to A7. But it's just enough

This thread builds up faster than you can keep up.

Thanks to all for the kinds words.
Gary, love the Canadian landscape shots with the 21 SEM. Beautiful country. Nice series of the graffiti covered walls as well with the ZM25
David, yes, didn't know SAP meets were fun until I was behind the M9
Katie, nice BW photos of evening light with long shadows.
asiafish, lovely series of photos.
AshNZ, loved the landscape photo of the Big Bend NP
Charlie, nice WA photos.
Sorry if I missed out anyone, but truly amazing and inspiring photos.

About the question by David as to go for the M9 or not, I am definitely not a long time user but judging by what I'm seeing out of my M9 and the over all experience of using the system, I'd definitely advice going in for it. For me, the overall image has a certain organic look and the colors have that depth which is difficult to reproduce in post from other sensors. I came across a thread on RFF where there is mention of the M9 sensor being developed to have the look of Kodak film. I like this look and the overall system has changed the way I shoot. I've sold a lot of my excess DSLR stuff here locally to raise funds for M lenses.

Brings me to another question on using the M9 as a landscape camera. How do you use a CPL or an ND Grad with the M9?

Thanks everyone for the "likes" .... Gary, lovely images and nice to see you hear Uhoh! The CV 21/4 was the one lens I have regret selling. It was such a great performer on the R4A. I need to use my 21/1.8 more on that camera. I have a few rolls of film to develop and maybe it will impress me as much as the tiny 21/4.

Anyway, still catching up on all the posts and all ... but congrats Allen (again) for the runner up position in the contest. Nice shots Manoj ... very crisp with the 50 Sonnar.

Also - I vote FOR the M9, of course. I still adore my M-E.

Some shots with the M-E and 35 1.2 from today. Went to an "off the grid" store/market/homestead place. This place is completely self sufficient with electricity, water, wastewater and trash. I don't think the food supply here is adequate, though ... as the greenhouse was rather small and I saw no animals being raised. They did have a gigantic gift shop (kids got me for $50 worth of junk) and a wonderful educational center/art center. This month they had a train table up and the kids ran the trains for awhile. I was more impressed with the control center of the whole operation - the solar charged battery station and power converters was pretty impressive. The yard art was other-worldly; made up of all reclaimed material found in dumpsters and old construction sites.

I saw this photo late today, ok, I didn't have to go far, it is in my master bath. lol.

The solar backdrop did burn through more than I saw initially, but still pretty cool effect.

Awesome Allen! It's funny - a few years ago I would have just glanced over pics such as these without giving it much thought. Now I have come full circle and have really learned to appreciate the vision, timing, and power which make up these simple (at first glance) images. Many of your images seem so "honest" and "real". Keep it up - I really enjoy them.
