So, now I am at a crossroads: an M9 I bought from this forum back in Jul13 had a known issue with its SD card interface. I could not fix that, but Leica AG came to the party and have fixed it free of charge - outstanding customer support ( was 2nd or 3rd hand and not under warranty). I will get the cam next week and apparently it will have a brand new sensor/rear screen/SD card assembly. I wonder will it have sapphire-glass?
The crossroads is whether I sell that, keep my M8 and buy the A7R that's calling to...Show more →
Leica service on average has been very good, other than the unfortunate issues with Edward, which are totally unacceptable. Keep the M9, as it is a FF, and great camera. The M9 is easily serviced by local repair centers if the RF is bumped out of calibration, unlike the M240's which need to be sent back to Solms.
I have the M240's for traveling and I usually only take a few lenses with me to keep the weight down, and keep my vision simple. My lens inventory is the 21 SEM, 24 Lux, 28 Cron, 35 Lux FLE, 50 Lux Asph, 50 Cron Rigid DR, 50 Nocti f/1.0, 75 Lux, 75 Cron AA and 90 Cron AA.
I have invested in M glass over last 3 years, selling off all my DSLR's and other cams.
I now have the A7r's, and at first I was frustrated with some of the ergonomics, but I can say now the detail and DR are amazing. The A7r is a perfect companion to the M240, and I may end up selling one of my M240's, but still keeping my M glass.
I hear what uhoh is saying, but I am a 50mm FL shooter, and don't often use WA's below 24mm, so the A7r is better suited in my case. From the above lens inventory, the only lenses that do not work with the A7r are, 21 SEM, 28 Cron Asph and 50 Lux Asph. All of the other lenses work brilliantly, and I have now fine tuned the technique in using the 50 Nocti f/1.0 with the A7r, and just use focus peaking set to high, and the near eye for portraits is focused correctly now about 95%. Even with the M240 with increased resolution, I have been resorting to the EVF with the fast lenses, as there is some focus shift at different f stops. For most of the Crons lenses, except the 90 Cron AA, the RF is quicker to focus.
The other point to note while traveling, the A7r body is easily replaced, as most overseas stores have stock. With insurance, the cusp of replacing a 2K body as versus a 8K body is a lot more palatable.
I am so pleased now that there is another option, of having a backup.
