Another batch from me. My wife and I were checking out Cathedral Park in Portland which is this really ornate and rather pretty bridge. All shots were taken on Portra 400.

Here are a few 90APO shots from yesterday. I have learned that for lens you don't like, you just need shoot a hay lot of images using it until you hit something or just let it go.

I don't see much 90APO images in this thread. I miss denoir in this forum and have to seek useful information back to the old day. A lots of fun discuss before. He seems like this lens very much. I recently also bought 90 Summarit (don't tell 90APO about that), unfortunately it does not have the same standard (actually very very good but we are talking specialty of 90APO here) of 90APO at infinity which is one of best out there at any aperture.

General speaking, this lens like many other Leica glass lack the micro contrast at close distance. Maybe is rangefinder thing that close focusing performance is not in Leica's design priority. Great Zeiss glasses will eat them live.

Anyway:

I've long found 90mm on rangefinders troublesome to master despite liking the focal length. I know there are many that use them to great effect however. I've been leaning very heavily on the Contax G2 system since picking it up but even on there I have trouble with the 90mm and focus accuracy (it's still new so I just have to give it time).

I have a feeling the focus is being missed at close distance, possibly due to rf calibration issues. I do like the photos though!

Actually, with M240 and good light, I don't miss focus much. I got 90% usable image and more than 50% prefect sharp image. for 90APO, I always focus from MFD to infinity, so even I miss focus I prefer front focusing than back focusing which is un usable most of time.

Actually, all above images I didn't miss focus and I just use RF focus without LV. As mentioned early, I don't have much trouble focus 90APO. My whole set are sync well with my M240. (for tricky light such as strong backlit and long distance, I turn on LV) The grass images are about 2M distance, at 1M the performance will further degrade a lot.

Here are a few 100% crop from the images posted above, what you guys think?

This is 2nd one, I don't see much difference between them. First is 39****, this is 43****. The last time with m9, this time with M240. I return the first one because focus play.

Once I have time, I will do a quick test between it and OTUS and sigma art on M240 over distance to prove my feeling.

The lens perform flawless at infinity, no decenter or any funky stuff. I think I shouldn't complain as 90% reason I bought it for long coverage during travel, especially landscape, I doubt I can do better with this weight. Ron's 90me may be another choice, maybe he can chime in, he is the only one have all 3 90 I am talking about APO, Summarit and ME. From MTF, APO is still the leader.

On the other hand, APO's MFD seems well documented during a discuss at LUF. Putt state:
"The only weaker point of the APO is its performance at closer distances (0.7 - 2m). Here we see some softness and loss of contrast. When optimum quality is required in this distance region, one has to stop down to 1:4."

I found this on craigslist and am not in need of an M9 but thought it was such a good deal that I would share it if anyone needs an M9 kit. (I do not know the seller, just passing along what looks like a great deal, so proceed with regular craigslist caution.)

If one cares about close focussing another option is the 90 Elmar Macro, which will obviously do close focussing quite well and with an EVF is easy to use. It is also very good for stopped down landscapes and if you want small for travel it is exceptionally small of course. At some point I will do a comparison between the 90 cron APO, 90 Elmar Macro, and the Zeiss Loxia 85 f/2.4 on both the M10 (which I finally got last week) and the Sony A7r II. Obviously the Zeiss only works on the Sony.

Yeh, I had a typo about Ron's 90ME, maybe it should 90EM
Anyway, Ron's latest 90 images all from that macro lens. I tried to get one but found out it is even more expensive than a 90APO 2nd hand and you know it was retail $2000 a few years ago. Leica must figure out they can charge more for it as small lens always have cute followers in M world.

I am keeping looking for it but will not pay more than $1800 for a 2nd hand one. At the end of day, I just need use 90APO a lot more to get a feeling out of it. Maybe a really loved image from it will do the trick. I generally feel pretty good about myself on judgement of lens, only a few tens of frames I can get a good feeling about the lens simply because I handled so many already will see.

You are right that the 90 Macro Elmar's prices are all over the place on the used market, but if you are patient you can get one for less and if you use the EVF then you don't need the goggles either, so sometimes you can find one without the goggles for less. I found mine for $1,600, but I had to look for a long time. That was without the macro adapter, however, which I now have and like very much for a number of lenses. I especially like it with the 50 cron APO.
