Shutterbug2006 Offline • • • Upload & Sell: On p.1 #1 · Anyone tried the Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM I've been wondering if anyone has or has tried one of these Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM lens? I already have a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM in my collection, which produces great shots, but it falls short when I do the (very) occasional bird watching etc. I'm just looking for some feedback. Though Sigma's website shows it lists for $2400 US, it appears to be available new for about $1650 US. Anyone have information or comments they'd like to share? Jul 02, 2010 at 12:26 AM

NinaS Offline • • • Upload & Sell: Off p.1 #2 · Anyone tried the Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM I have a 50-500 sigma, love it on sunny days below is a hand held shot at 500mm ... the pictures says it all I've shot dog agility & dog frisbee outside with this lens, and it is fast on a sunny day ... I stress the conditions in lower light, it is slow but on a bright day, it is an awesome lens and worth the $$ I have the $1K version & use it every summer have used it on the 300D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 5D & 7D I'm not a birder, but I do make my living shooting the fastest dogs running agility and use my 70-200 f/2.8 indoors for that, so when I say the sigma is fast on a sunny day, it really is fast on a sunny day Jul 02, 2010 at 03:08 AM

There was a thread on here by the lens rental guy (i think) that showed the new lens. not much from it but it said it looked promising. If you want a long zoom lens with OS/IS your choices are pretty limited. the Canon 100-400 is probably the safest bet but the new sigma has got to be worth a look. I read it was short of 500 but 465 at infinity! so is it 500 anywhere? or does it shorten even more at shorter distances? I thought that zooms were their rated MM (with in a decent %) at infinty but that at other distanses were a bit shorter. How close to 400 is the 100-400? According to what I read, the new version (OS) is very similar in IQ, but instead of start in f/4 starts in f/4.5. I replaced it with the 100-400 IS and a 2X TC which while being a little slower with the TC, extended my reach considerably. The IQ was ok on the non IS but I am far happier with the 100-400. I like all of the Sigma lens for the money and they are good lenses, but I like the results of my Canon lens better. Nov 12, 2010 at 02:28 PM

Bruce Carmody Offline • Account Locked p.1 #12 · Anyone tried the Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM I tried out the new version with OS back in the late spring. Had it for 4-5 days. I found that my version wasn't bad, but was not quite as sharp as either my 400 f5.6 or my 100-400. I really would have liked the extra reach, but felt that I would always be unhappy with the lack of sharpness. It also didn't seem to be a true 500mm when I compared images shot with the 400 f5.6.
