that's swirly bokeh. when people say bubble bokeh i thing of bokeh balls with rings. what you're showing is just cats eye and swirl (which is what i think of for the e55 lux).

edit: i think of the image in this link has having slightly bubbly bokeh: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/895186/97#10582250

Guys, advice please. I have now a triplet of R lenses: 28 Elmarit, 60 Makro Elmarit, 80 'Lux. I ma looking for a 50, as an all-purpose lens (do-anything, take-anywhere). I have tried a 'Cron, and like it. Any sense in going for a 'Lux? I don't shoot wide open that much at all, neither do I do portraits.
So, what will it be?

I own both and there is no comparison between the 50/55 and the 50/60. They only share the same focal lenght and that's it.

The 50/60 is way beyond the 50/55 in all considerations including color rendition - contrast and IQ.

It is like comparing the Elmarit 180 and the APO Elmarit 180 or the Cron 90 and the AA 90. There is no comparison!

As for the usual internet comments, If they they really had a 50/60, they will not let it go and saved us from armchair comparisons between the 50/55 and the 50/60.

Whether you are ready to pay such price for the 50/60 is another matter.

The 50/55 is a perfect all rounder.

Couldn't agree more. Still my fav 50, and I've been through many!

You are probably right for the images I posted, although I do think that the second shot shows some bubbliness, in a half-circle kind of way. I do have a tendency to call even slightly over-corrected spherical aberration (I believe that is what causes it?) lens boke bubbly.

for background bokeh over-correction causes it, for foreground bokeh under-correction will cause it.

Undercorrected SA lens will have more nervous foreground bokeh and smoother background bokeh.
Overcorrected SA lens will have smoother foreground bokeh and more nervous background bokeh.
Rokkor 58/1.2 is undercorrected SA.
for background bokeh over-correction causes it, for foreground bokeh under-correction will cause it.

Cross-post from the Walter Mandler thread:

Slowly, I start to understand how to use the Summilux-R 1.4/80mm. I really like how it renders, so it does it's job very well. Whenever something doesn't look good enough, I blame the user (aka me).

FYI, Mifsuds in the UK have a 50mm summilux-R E55 for 499 (boxed).

Seems like a great price, I've dealt with Mifsuds before and highly recommend them.

They also have some Contax AE lenses for amazing prices, in case someone is interested for an A7 or similar.

Here are some images cross posted in the Sony A7/A7r/A7s Image thread taken late yesterday afternoon and at or near the top of the Trexler Nature Preserve, Schnecksville, PA with my Leica R 280mm f4 Apo Telyt lens and my Sony A7r camera. The first image was with the lens monopod mounted while the remaining images were taken with the lens tripod mounted. All images processed in LR5.5.

Not 'arf cheap too! Good find. I'd never buy brand new again. Think the FE 55 will have been my last ever purchase of a new lens.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the late model 50/2

Had one a while ago but have now sold all my R lenses.
I have a strange hankering after a 50 summicron 'made in germany', though I already have ZE 50 planar and makro-planar.

I may just have managed to buy the E55 you posted about, it was tricky since they are rather far from me and are going through server upgrades and such, and are unreachable via the internet. Terribly nice people, I spoke to Jackie and a gentleman whose name I didn't catch. It isn't actually boxed though, which I don't mind about.

I have wanted to try this lens for a while, but hadn't gotten around to it, thinking that they were much more expensive. I think I would primarily use it for portraits though, the bubble-ish boke doesn't appeal to me so much, i.e. backlit foliage and such.

Johnahill...just got the late model (373xxxx) made in Germany R Cron 50 yesterday. Taking it, and my E55 Lux 50 to work today and will try to compare them. As I've stated, the Lux is my fav 50 so far. But I am curious to see how the Cron stacks up against it. The Cron was my very first R lens, and got me really into them. Are there any diff between the Germany made vs Canada made? The person I traded from, said he thought the coatings might be a little diff...?? I also have the CV Nokton 50 1.5 ASPH, and it's a fantastic little lens. And, eventually, I won't need 3 50's(although several arguments can be made for keeping all 3), but those arguments will be lost on my wife!!!
I'll post later tonight or through this weekend on them!
Gregg

Mine (serial # 3387xxx) works fine on my 5D2 and doesn't hit the mirror. But there are copies which don't work. As far as I know, Serials from 379xxxx on (built in 1998 and later) have problems with 5D-Mirror.
