I have been looking into the 50 Summicron (2) I have been reading about it in the Leica Pocket Book and it doesn't mention that it was made both in Canada and in Germany. It appears from used sites though that it was. The Germany one appears to carry a hefty premium. Optically was there any difference between the two?

For some it does and for some it does not.

What seems to be the case (seems underlined) is two issues:
1- The lens coating difference......
2- While it is the same optical formula, many question if it is the same glass quality, bearing in mind that glass for all lenses of all manufacturers is produced in batches and.......etc

We are splitting hairs here as to whether the Chateau Margaux 1956 is better than 1957.....you still need to find the guy who tasted both....

Teasing answer Almass

Good wine depends on wine maker`s skills and vision.
50mm f/2 Summicron-R I produced till 1975 was a genius design of Walter Mandler. So were next versions: v.II non-ROM and v.II ROM version, which as Almass mentioned differed in coating and was co-designed with Garry Edwards & Erich Wagner (1977 design inputs)

As for Canadian or German `versions` - I don`t know if there were versions differences beside ROM, which was produced only in W. Germany. The ROM version costs hefty premium as Milkman mentioned, but mainly for such reason.

Milkmanm you may want to download free, older PDF version of Puts` "Leica Compendium" for more info.

I guess that diffrerent coatings of the R50/2E55 is a myth. All lenses from 3xxxxx and for last releases have the same coating. There is even "3 ver." if we investigate thoroughly. One before 361.... - they are made in Canada. Second non-ROM made in Germany, and last ROM made in Germany too.

By my opinion more important for choose looking better condition and "ninja-free" aperture near f/2...f/2.8. Ninja-free copies very low quantity by my opinion, I saw only one absolutely free with serial 335....

Alex. Do you mean same story as 180/2.8 APO for Ninja?

I will check the 50's this evening as you got me curious

Almass, not the same... I guess with ideal aperture can be found in the 32...33...34 Canadian range (but and here it's rare lenses). I never seen aperture without any N-effect in modern Germans lenses... 36, 37, 38, 39 - all have a bit or even not a bit

I have statistics for R35/1.4 - here almost clear for me... Last half of first batch starts from 32720xx and finished 32734xx and last batch 397xxxx. This releases free from N-effect.

With R180APO - here all clear - only second version starts around from 38974xx (thanks to Ron here). 38972xx - it's still first ver. and have terrible N-effect

But need to check anyway if this important for you. This is mass production and of course possible exceptions during production

Gregg - Ninja star is the shape of the aperture when closing down. Nothing wrong with it, just different. The contax 35 and 85 1.4 AEG version of the lens exhibit this trait. See Link...

Robin - Another excellent shot. Good job...

Worldinlens, Almass and Jako Thanks for the information. Thanks for the guidelines on what serial numbers I should look for. Probably I should just get one and use it to see if it bothers me or not in the photos that I take.

Jako Thanks for the link. I sure wish it came with the photos.

Kokosai, here another case a bit. This does specially as well as Helios 40-2 for exapmle. This is complex shape of the aperture blades for more and better ray transmission.

In the Leica R lenses all "ninja" it's design mistakes I think. Small or obvious as first APO180/2.8. Just not enough lenght of blades. And all

Got some more information on the lens I was looking at. It's an early 50mm Cron with the serial #291xxxxx

At $300 and it looks to be in pretty good condition, I think I'll be OK?

Great shots all.

Lieutenant Z: Love the blurred effect with the stationary background.
Jako: Love the mood of the shot and the textures in the foreground.
Kokusai: You've captured the detail in the arches well.
Robin Bush: Great foreground textures again. A great example of the use of the big stopper.

60mm Macro

75-200/f4.5

PS. My order of film arrived today. Going to load up the R4 and give it a go. Haven't shot film since I was a kid probably 20 years ago.
