Rendering of E55 is dependent on the distances to the object and the background as well as many other lenses. But of course R80 have very smooth and "watercolor" bokeh

The E60 has smoother boke than both E55 and 80 Lux, IMO.

I agree with Carstenw's view on 50lux E60. It has special character not seen from other 50mm lens. 80lux is smooth, but for short tele, it is not uncommon. The problem is price, that E60 is too damn expensive now.
You won't find many samples from that lens for its price, but alex/Worldinlens have shown many shots that E60 capable for in this thread.

80mm–200mm f/4 Vario-Elmar-R

A quick 8 image stitch using the 180/3.4 Telyt APO on my D800:

A lot of post processing work to bring this out as it was very very hazy and contrast was especially low.

You do realize that a camera or a lens modifications [shaving] may be needed in order to clear mirror if shooting DSLR? Check Alex's (Worldinlens) site for more info and services.

The good news is that there are many samples of this lens on eBay in excellent condition so you shouldn't have any problems finding one and sending it for a 'surgery'.

Good luck and I hope to see your initial test shots soon as I have interest in this lens as well.

LoL. That is a very big blanket statement.

The Lux 50/E60 has a "different" Bokeh compared with the Lux 80.

Smoother? I don't know. But interesting situation.

Can you substantiate your statement or are you looking at different pics over the net?

Your statement made me curious and I just had to test it and shot these 2 pics as a quick and dirty.
No CC or PP only cropping for size. The sides are irrelevant.
This is by no means a pro test but more of a dipstick test.

Even as such, the comparison would not be fair in view of the compression of the 50mm v 80mm.
Pics are with the 50/E60 WO and the Lux 80 WO.

Which is which and which do I prefer? I am not sure which is smoother? It is not fair to say as the focal compression changes the game. The Lux 80 does show a smoother DoP but the overall image of the Lux 50 is more smooth. Test as done is not conclusive. I need more and better testing.
I only did this on the spur of the moment.

Unfortunately, I put away my equipment as a better test would be to have a 3 stage DoP as here I only have FG and MG. I need to reshoot FG - MG - BG.
The whole picture is different with each of these 2 lenses and one should not look strictly at a particular segment.

As stated earlier, this test is by no means conclusive and only shows that we have to be careful before making blanket statements.

As for the Lux 50/E60 and the Cron 50/E55. The DoP is definitely smoother on the Lux 50/E60 as shown here. Both lenses at f2.

But, hey it is all good fun.

I don't think that anyone would dispute that the E55 is the loser here, where smoothness is concerned.

I owned the 80 Lux for some time, and had my hands on the E60 for some time, although I did not own it. The 80 Lux is a fantastic lens, and one of my favorites of all time, but in some lighting scenarios it could have quite harsh boke. It also has more CA, IIRC. The E60 is not perfect, but it is overall just an amazingly well behaved lens with beautiful boke. Of all 50s I have tried, I only like the 50 Lux M ASPH better, in the department of smooth boke. There is a lot to say for the variants of the 50 Planar as well though, but it doesn't have as smooth boke by far.

I guess if you want to torture test the boke (which is really the only place where there is a qualitative preference of the E60 over the 80 Lux), put bright lights in the background. Christmas lights, sun-lit branches against the sky, metal fences, those kinds of scenes.

thanks! i love bird shots, just not typically BIF shots, which i tend to find boring due to the lack of environment. if you can position yourself above the BIF things get more interesting.

also, just to be pedantic the FL55 shot was a crow while these were ravens.
