How could people be afraid of manual focus?
The wide aperture makes the viewfinder extremely bright. If you're not sure you could use liveview.
Canon lenses (even the L's) do not have focus ring as smooth as the older Zeiss, Takumar or Leica or the Rokinon of new.
Try it and practice and you'll love it.

Thanks for the link! Looks cool... and yes, I've been out of the Alt forum for a while... been just shooting Leica film bodies so none of this stuff matters... but then my scanner died.

Here's one that I think has had some talk over in the alt-world. Things have changed since the last time you looked, methinks (haven't tried this chip to be honest, but have some f1.8 and f2 chips which are correct at said apertures)

Same here, that was going to be my MF lens, and instead I just MFed the lens. It was great in the AF department, and was a wickedly sharp lens.

For my MF to be in focus, I'd have to shoot at like f/5.6 and "hope" I hit the target.

AF lenses are terrible to MF with. Dedicated MF lenses usually have buttery smooth focus rings that make it easy. Couple that with a basic focus screen and a little practice and you'll be surprised how easy it really is.

I'm afraid of the MF but ordered one of these from fleabay yesterday after all the photos/talk. Can't hurt too much to play with it at this price. I'll play with it a bit and if I need to grab one of them AF confirm chips.

Of course I'm more afraid of being able to keep the kids still long enough to be able to focus on them before they move again.

To all of the people scared of manual focus: Just do it! With a precision focus screen and smooth focus ring it's a joy to MF, not a pain.

I'll admit that that I would never be able to focus it with a 1000D or such.

Here's a sample @1.4 (picture is from facebook, the quality may not be optimal)

Bummer on the scanner--hope you can get back to it soon. The Rok is a killer app lens, though, so maybe worth playing around with ;-)

Great lens! And MF isn't hard at all, it just takes some practice.

the problem with the scanner is that no one makes an affordable quality unit any longer. I bought my Coolscan V for ~$350 new, now they are almost $1000 used and the only new replacement costs $2200. Nikon will still service my Coolscan, so they think it can be fixed, but they don't know... and I thought I could stick with 35mm film until it became obsolete, but now it looks like lack of scanners are going to kill off film for me.

What the hell happened there! It would seem those shots it would be easy for the 7D to AF. I use the 7D in like dungeons and it does great.

Did you end up getting usable shots?

Yes thanks, being an experienced paranoid I also shot them on my 5D2's which have a more reliable AF system.

Not having shot the 5D2, I can't comment on that, but I can tell you that my 7D churns out plenty of in focus action photos with a higher keeper rate than any other camera I've used so far.

I suggest sending your 7D in, and having it serviced. Those are not results that I would expect to see out of it. The other question would be, is the lens fully functioning?

Would love to see more examples of this Rokinon... Anyone have some night shots, landscapes? I want to see more of the bokeh and colour rendition.

Better yet, why multiple points instead of single point? If you're looking for reliability choosing auto selection multi point AF is the worst idea. A real 'facepalm' moment.

Since no explanation has come, I am guessing that you can't explain why the most basic features of a $1700 camera should not be expected to work as described in the manual. As a reminder, here's the shot again so you can see how confusing the scene was, and how only an amateur would expect AF to work in these circumstances:
http://cyberphotographer.com/7d/focushell/18.jpg

This is why manual focus is not optional, but essential, and why the Rokinon has an advantage over many Canon lenses in that it has a good manual focus ring, and automatic depth of field preview, so that you can concentrate on photography instead of beta testing high-stakes computer games.
