wow...amazing pics everyone... I have a quick question that I want to pose to everyone here... Im heading out west this summer for a science meeting (virology) and will get a chance to vacation afterwards... me and my wife will hit glacier, yellowstone and grand teton national parks and Im agonizing about lens choices. Im a grad student so right now all I have is my trusty 5D + 28/2.8 distagon and the new 100/2 MP. Unfortunately I don't really have much in the way of money to spend on glass (maybe 300-400 if Im lucky) b/c most of it is going towards the travel costs but Im still feeling a bit limited by my current set up. I don't want to get rid of the 100mm and so I've been thinking... do I replace the 28/2.8 (which is admittedly a great lens) with something more versatile like a 28-85 vario sonnar or if I can pull the money together to I go for a combo like a 35-70mm vario-sonnar and a wide lens like an oly 21mm or maybe something crazy like a sigma 14/3.5. What do you guys think? How big is the difference between the 35-70 and 28-85 on FF? I'm at the point where Im just talking myself in circles and the fact that I've been in the lab and not taking pics doesn't help so any insight would be appreciated (especially from those that have traveled to the above mentioned places). Thanks!

Max, why don't you simply get a C/Y 50mm f:1.7, and keep you other two lenses? It won't stretch your finances overmuch, and it is a great imagemaker. Just my $0.02

the thought has crossed my mind but I was wondering how important the flexibility of a zoom is in those parks and if 28mm is really "wide enough"... but yea... the 50/1.7 is a possibility

The 50/1.7 is going for around $150 ($180 after the adapter, if needed). Definitely not bad for the optics your getting.

What are you afraid of, Max, that a Teton is going to change places while you change lenses? Not that I want to discourage you from a 35-70, mind you, I just got mine, and it is glued to my camera right now...
But if, as you said, money is tight, you can't get more IQ for your money than 50 f:1.7.

Keep the 28/2.8 and go for a 35-70 if you can find one - I'm hearing they are closer to $500.00 usd these days. If you decide to sell the 28 - PM me, however I have a few on watch selling within the next week.

The landscape at Yellowstone and Glacier are larger than life and frame well with those focal lengths. Sure - you'll always find a reason to shoot longer and wider - but the majority of the framing will be within those FL's without loosing to much detail.

C/Y 35-70 - 35mm @ f8 - nice framing that includes detail of the scene. 17-24 is a wonderful FL but sometimes pushes the detail so far back it just gets lost - great for a colorful sky however.

I could buy a 100mm f:2.0, which would complement my lineup nicely. What price should I expect to pay? There is one for sale for 990€, or $1250. Is it really worth that much?

I got my copy from fellow FM'r for ~$950.
From looking at recent B&S forum sales of this lens, they were in the range of $900-$1150.
You can also check Jim C.'s lens database.

You might not want to do that as plenty of people here would charge you for all your great shots in the ZE thread helping them to lust over ZE lenses.
