pengland,

Nice lens to convert - I've had my eye on one of those. Nice shots - very industrial. I wonder how the FD 35 compares to the EF 45 TS-E?

Thanks,

I don't have any experience with any other tilt lenses so I can't draw any conclusions about one versus another.
In terms of versatility I like this FL and having an f2.8 aperture available. For my taste it's a step back from a normal lens without being too wide either.

First image is a kind of DIY tilt / shift or freelensing: I took a Canon FD 28mm/2.8 apart, I removed the mount and iris ring. Then I glued some foam tape as light seal.
On crop DSLR - like my EOS 350D these lenses are very sharp.

As an option to have a DIY tilt lens with more stable mechanics I took a Canon FD 50/1.8 lens apart. And connectet the optical elements and the helicoid to a halogen tilt spotlight housing:

Nice DIY!

Does your light fixture allow the lens to tilt at any angle (left, right, up, down)? Is there any reason why you couldn't have done the same with the 28mm lens that you used on your first DIY?

I could turn the tilt axis via my adapter, I have to refocus afterwards, but with a tilted lens you always have to refocus.
I could have done the same with the 28 mm FD lens - but I like the possibilities of the "freelensing" lens to - I could shift and tilt it to get the full crop camera sensor illuminated despite of the camera mirror housing.
At the moment I have a more precises metal housing here, think about a tilt lens for 24x36 with a 80 mm Zenzazon lens I got.

My DIY lenses are for sure not that precise and rigid as a adapted Canon FD TS lens or something like that, but they cost only ~ 30 Euro. And they are the brightest tilt lenses for Crop cameras. Also thougt about modifying my Samyang 14 mm / 2.8 lens to s Tilt / Shift - good wide ange.

Try-in' out Double-Take plug in for Aperture - Three frame shift pano w/ 7 degrees tilt - 90 TS-E

Nice, mMontag. I've been meaning to try some panos with the TS-E for some time now and never seem to get around to it.Most of my shifting is for composition, like the one below that was taken out the bathrom window from an angle that required full shift to get a reasonable composition:

mMontag,

Thanks for sharing the TS-90 pano.
I would have thought that at 7 degrees tilt the fence posts in the foreground would have been more blurry at the top of them and same with the top of the mountains in the background.
How would rate the sharpness of this shot vs. a pano with a zeiss prime like a 50MP or ZE 35 or maybe CZ 35-70 zoom?

wayne,

I like the 90 - but when compared (we really should stop all this comparison) to the 24II TS-E it really looks weak. It does pretty good for some landscape. It does a little better using it for shift pano's without so much tilt - I have a few of those from the Grand Canyon I'll try to post later. I may look into the Mirex with an 80 Mamiya or Hassleblad.

Canon needs to update the 45 & 90 TS-E's to the new standards. I'm now feeling like the 90 is a better studio product lens. For really primo landscape stick with the Zeiss and new TS-E's.

Thanks mMontag for the info.
Except 24 doesn't work for distant lanscape shots like this.
Instead I stitch using either my 100/2 Planar or 50MP but then have the problem without tilt of trying to get ultimate sharpness in near foreground and far background. Haven't tried Helicon Focus yet to see if that works well enough to then not need tilt. Tilt also doesn't work well if the foreground has any relative tall subjects in the foreground like the Lupine flowers in the cover shot of this months Outdoor Photographer take with the TS-E 24 mk2.

Agreed - doing pano's with a longer FL and bringing in the detail - the 90 has a bit of a challenge with the MFD of 90mm - where the tilt helps out to bring the foreground in. Also for what I've attempted with the 90 - live view may help with the overall focus - I'm using a 5d. With a little experimentation - there probably is a "correct" tripod height, MFD and tilt combination to really dial it in. I'll keep at it a while and look into other possibilities.

I have seen a few "horizontal" pano's posted that the photographer had explained the foreground was taken at a close-in focus and background at infinity - looked really convincing. Might be the ticket for a six shot stack composite.

Time to resurrect this sub-thread! With TS-E 90 (1st two with downward tilt for foreground/background focus, 3rd with upward tilt to minimize range of focus, last not tilted, but shifted for composition):

The canon 90 ts-e is a great but I donīt use tilt/shift that much.
I am happy with my franken-tilt which has to be considered alternative...

Funny this thread would re-surface today - just received the Mirex/Hasselblad and using a Hasselblad "F" 80/2.8 - first impressions are very positive. That lens and the Mirex were made for each other. Nice FL, size/weight and fit on a 5d Canon.

The Hasselblad has excellent IQ, good MFD, wonderfully dampened focus ring and a pre-set on the aperture - the Mirex is a marvelously engineered high quality product. I'm liking the combination much better than the 90 TS-E - and for less cost. Single frame tilt and three frame shift w/tilt landscape pano's look really good.

This is exciting - a Zeiss T/S - I wish I would have invested in this rig a long time ago.

mMontag,

^^^ Looks good. I agree with you, much better than the TS-E 90.
Interested in how much the tilt helps in getting more DOF for those near-foreground-far-background type landscape shots with this 80mm focal length.
I took some panos last month in Arches and Canyonlands with the CZ 100/2 and really like how they came out stitched with CS5.
