There was aortic aneurysm just above the aortic heart valve which damaged the valve too. So the bad section of aorta was removed and replaced as was the aortic heart valve.

I can't tell what is what but since my girlfriend is a medical student find that stuff very interesting.

those are cool pictures - surgery is very interesting - my only claim to fame is that I worked with Robert Jarvik developing the original artificial heart in Salt Lake city many years ago - and I was always so interested in how they could replace the heart valves and eventually the whole heart with plastic and aluminum- these are great detailed pictures - we did not have digital photography back then - I took a lot of BW with film

Heh, sorry, I am a biological engineer, so these photos are very exciting for me...

Not graphic at all though, at least not for me. It's amazing how we can replace parts of our body now a days... Thanks for sharing!

My Curiosity Question/Suggestion:

Tell us what procedures and method and/or gear were used to make sure your camera equipment was sterile and OK to have so close to the action and posed no risk to the patient. Or what concern was there regarding photo gear/camera in the OR.

i've had the pleasure of watching a bypass, an aortic valve replacement and a total knee replacement. also 17 years of icu, trauma, burns and emergency room. the body is an amazing and hearty machine.
