I'd appreciate your suggestions on how to soften or remove the shadow behind her head.

You could try copying a patch with any selection tool and feather the selection from the adjoining area of either side so it looks more natural and then mask out with a soft brush to bring back the hair line. The shadow is running down the entire length of her body and appears to be coming from above. Otherwise, it is a nice shot.

To reduce the shadow you could use the patch tool of healing brush:

Thanks for the suggestions; I tried both the healing brush and patch tool with not such good results. I couldnt get the healing brush to give me the right tone even though I was using a sample area just above the dark shadow. The Patch tool was the same thing with the addition of not getting a nice blend with the surroundung texture. I'll keep plugging away and let you know how I do.

Perhaps I don't understand what you wish to accomplish. Here's a quick version, using the Healing Brush, varying the brush diameter and hardness and selecting different source points:

Your example is exactly what I want to do, but I'm not getting there. I didn't adjust the hardness, so I'll try that tonight.

BTW, sampling from a more distant place may produce a better result. In my example I sampled most from distant points.
