p.1 #1 · is this ok? 27 imac, eye-one display2 & color match 3
i recently got the new 27" imac and set about to color calibrate it. as many know, this screen can be almost painfully bright!
when i set about to install the latest eye-one match 3 software to use with my eye-one display 2 puck, i noticed a footnote that said, "Version 3.6.3 supports Apple OSX v10.6 (Snow Leopard). Please be aware that this release of Eye-One Match is currently not able to create correct large ICC4 monitor profiles on the new Intel Macs. It is recommended to create only default monitor profiles on the Intel Macs until a new version of Eye-One Match will be released. This NOT a software issue but an OS issue; Snow Leopard versions OSX10.6 and OSX 10.6.1, do not support ICC version 4 profiles."
now, i gotta be honest and say i really dont know exactly what thats saying...or more specifically WHY its saying it.
i did a little digging around and seemed to get the impression that the difficulty in dealing with with imac calibration (lots of models, not just the newest ones) was that they were too bright at the lowest settings.
however, the latest imacs, the 27" and i assume the 21.5 seem to be able to get down dark enough.
so i went about to calibrate at these settings
medium white (6500)
gamma 2.2 (the recommendation
luminance 120 - lcd recommendation
i like to use the keys on the keyboard to work the brightness for ease of repeatability. 8 dots = 130 luminance
so if im able to get the brightness right-ish, is the software doing the rest of the calibrating correctly?
im colorblind and dont print my own stuff, so you know...
in fact, im personally amazed at how much of my work never gets printed by people who buy it. it goes on facebook and thats it...which is completely fine with me. the other stuff, people order prints via zenfolio, so mpix prints it. i RARELY see my work printed, unless i do it for my wall or see it on someone else's wall. its always looked fine to me. most recently i was using a 15" macbook pro uni-body, just fyi. the new 27" imac makes it look positively dim (and tiny!)
i bring that up because i read in another post in the forum, that the lower luminances have to do with printing and comparing your prints to your screen, where you want the whites on the screen to match paper white...which LOOKS dim.
personally i dont really like the way the screen looks at about 50% brightness. i prefer it at 12 dots or about 75% of its brightness. in fact, while running calibration before i posted this, i looked to see about what that equals and, for me, 12 dots (75%) is about 228 in the luminance reading... thats probably making a few people cringe now, i know
so are is what ive done, sufficient to get skin tones that are fairly accurate?
i mean, I really can only tell when the skin color is really off in lightroom. otherwise i either let my girlfriend help me or have my clients here and tweak it in front of them till they seem happy.
if i use these settings/steps should i have any problems?
