EOS20,
since this thread is becoming the most popular for discussing the newly announced 550D / T2i, it could be easier for all users to locate it if you include "Rebel T2i" in the thread title. Just a suggestion.
I have been very surprised how there was uproar when the 50D was announced with 15 meg and was deemed to have too many, then along comes the 7D with 18 meg and all is well
Canon really can do miracles if they have the noise under control on these small 18 meg sensors. Are they really losing nothing? How did they do that, and so quickly?
Holy s**t. RIP XXD line I guess? Those specs are a lot better than I expected out of the T2i. Now I've got a dilemma as to what to do with my all my CF storage. I was hoping for a 50D/60D - as I can't justify the 7D - decisions, decisions.
Many will still pefer the ergonomics, VF, autofocus and frame rate of the XXD over the rebels.
Of course...but where is there room for a 60D between the T2i and the 7D? A similar camera with a neutered 7D AF, maybe some higher ISO capabilities, and build of a 50D? Doesn't seem like a product they would justify making.
Moving on from the 450D, the 550D would make a high res f/2.8 out of my 400f/5.6L (except for the DOF). For the money saved I now could get a 500L for free!
alright, so you're saying the 500d is amazing on it's own? even if the 550d might have some better specs, its around 200 more and is not even out? i assume that stuff like manual video control and maybe even the 1080/20fps can be fixed with a firmware upgrade or 3rd party version?

My guess is no. Chances are the T1i is limited to 20fps by virtue of the hardware, be it bus speed or processing power or whatever. Also, to me, the addition of a mic input elevates the T2i well beyond the T1i in the video dept, unless you like recording your audio separately from your video.

Why? You are in for a lot of heartache if you get depressed every time Canon releases a new model. Answer this question: Does your camera meet your needs? Lots of folks around here are pleased as punch with 20 and 30D's and Rebel XT's because the cameras meet their needs.
It's tempting to have 18mp in a lightweight body. I might be tempted to buy this and ebay my 450, when the price comes down and there are a few reviews out there. My 7d is brilliant but is a bit of a lump on the back of my bike and as for airline hand-luggage limits it's a real problem. That's what sold me the 450 18 months ago. I love the 7d controls though and would miss the big wheel on the back.
Spec-wise, this looks like a home-run for Canon. They've packed a TON of features into an entry-level body. I'm guessing they again figured out that in order to sell glass, you need people to buy into your system...
I occasionally use my better half's XSi. Aside from that, I don't normally even follow much of what Canon does in their xxxD line. But reading through what they've brought out in this camera, all I could say was "wow".
Jury is obviously still out on the image quality, but on paper, this looks like one very full featured camera for a very reasonable price.
550D version pretty much answer all the complaints against 500D features. I just bought 500D few months back and I think I will keep the camera for this moment as I am pretty much satisfied with the quality and its features. It would be nice if I had manual setting for video and full 1080p HD capability, but not that important for my photography purposes. I can live with 720p for now.
Here is my considerations :
- New LCD (Widescreen, a bit higher in resolution) - not important
- New 63 metering system (dual) - perhaps important but I don't see any reason for upgrade based on this as 500D metering system already meet my needs.
- 18 Mega pixels - not important
- Customize ISO - not important
- EV +/- 5.0 - not important
- Video manual + Full HD - important
- mic-in - important
- new sensor design (more pixels) - needs to be proven for the effectiveness on reducing noises.
As you can see, the major update on 550D actually on its video capability. on the photography side, things to consider are the new metering & new sensor (for better exposure and noise control). Those 2 important factors for upgrade. but for the money, about $200-$300 price difference (perhaps more by the time 550D available for sale) is a lot.
If you haven't purchase 500D and have the money, this camera worth for upgrade. But if you are on the budget, go with 500D as this camera will be selling at bargain.

I can still see a place for a 60D and Mark just explained why.
The only thing I like about the 550D is its size; otherwise, I'd much rather pay a little for for the ergonomics, AF and frame rate of the XXD series, yet for me, the 7D is more than what I need in terms AF and fps and not worth the extra $.
