That EC, the ISO6400 and the new metering system are very worthwhile upgrade from 450D IMO but not from 500D. Small incremental upgrade, specially the video from 500D.
This could be a good camera for macro but I wonder if such high MP could have an noticeably negative impact on diffraction with my MP-E 65mm, specially at 5:1.

No offense mate, but if the Rebel body is beneath you, why bother posting at all?

The disappointing thing is there never is any surprise in the Rebel line
It's always just the same old incremental upgrade
The new LCD and raft of video features and 3.5mm plug are interesting, but hardly jaw dropping
I'd have to disagree there mate. ISO3200 on the 500D was a surprise wasn't it? Noone expected that on a Rebel, and now ISO6400 is unexpected too, at least for me. I thought Canon was gonna let it stay at 3200. The new metering system is also more than incremental I think, lifted straight out of 7D.
High ISO for me has never been a "feature" because one can just underexpose and push in PP, though that is true what you say
What I have liked about the Rebel series though is the ease through which features can be changed with the 4 directional buttons
The stupid 1,5,7,xxD series all require this ridiculous pressing of a top button, squinting at a tiny monochrome screen (+ having to turn on the lamp in low light), then scrolling through using a wheel...time consuming nonsense...I hate the main dial on those cameras
It also states in the PR that there's Auto Focusing during Video Recording (by half pressing the shutter button during recording). Doesn't state if it tracks anything though, just "focusing".

I like the back wheel, after a few days of use it's easy to remember where each button is and the info changes in the viewfinder for ISO etc. A lot faster than taking the camera away from the eye, but it does simplify things for entry level users. One can always press the Info button for a nice big screen of information on xx/7/5/1 series.

Hopefully better than on my 5D2 which always seems to find focus.. then shift itself a little bit out ago and back again.

Yeah, I don't get that too. What's the point of that 80s style monochrome LCD on top of the body? To save the battery so you don't have to use the big LCD at the back? But the big LCD is so much easier to use in terms of the information being displayed as well as the way you hold the camera.

It may be better, just as the 500D got a better sensor than 50D (see here for example).
The 500D image quality is one of the best you get, I know since I own one
It lacks any sort of banding (horizontal as in the 50D, or vertical as in the 7D).
However, the numbers at DPR confuse me. The exact image size is the same as the 7D, and they say 18.0 million total pixel and 18.7 million effective. Probably a lot of typos.
I downloaded one of the samples (with skies and clouds), and stretched the levels to enhance contrast. The vertical banding is there, not any better than the 7D.
