p.1 #1 · Night Photography 101

Just published a pretty thorough article on Night photography from conceptualization, technique and post-processing, including pano and stacked star trails in Photoshop CS4.

http://www.availablelightimages.com/articles/technical-writing/night-light

Any C&C's of this first draft appreciated.

Cheers all,

Alister

Was just looking at the photos on your website and they are stunning.

Looking forward to reading your article on B&W photography on my train ride home this evening. Thanks so much for sharing.

Thanks for that.. It was quite a bit of work to get all this together, it is easy to forget how much we know until we try and write it all down..

Thanks, though I think our approaches are complementary. I wrote mine as a sort of quick primer for folks who just need the basics. There is, as you certainly know, a lot more to this than just the basics, though.

Dear ailbenn: Fine Work! But you owe yourself a copy of AutoPano Pro which is much, MUCH more powerful, fast and hassle free than typical stitching programs.

But in almost all cases the stitching in CS4 will work just fine - great, even.

Alister, I'm only about half way through the article, but it's great so far. Interesting information and it looks like you have answered a lot of questions I've had such as moon placement, lighting, and etc.

I am looking forward to reading your tutorial, Alister. I have always wanted to try night photography, especially star trails, but wasn't sure where to begin. You article looks like a great starting place. Thanks so much for the effort involved in putting the tutorial together.

Alister, that is a fantastic article and I will be studying it closely. You will be responsible for vastly improving my night shots.

If I may make one suggestion on lights for night work. I do astrophotography with a group of amateur astronomers on Haleakala and they are adamant about using red lights, to the point of keeping some red gel paper available for anyone who happened to bring a white light flashlight.

I have a really great adjustable headlamp that has both red and white lights in it and is adjustable as to brightness. White light robs night vision but red does not and taking night shots requires good night vision. I'd change that one bit on headlamp recommendations to specify red lighting. Any other photographers who are out there with you will appreciate it.
