A7 + CY35-70 and ... a shot of an old car
That shot is so sharp I need a band-aid from viewing it.

I'm sure there are other reasons, but a few reasons come to mind: weight, range and Sony rather than Zeiss?
Sony expecting very high margins on their lenses?

I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of it, but I don't have any idea of what margins Sony has on the SEL2470Z vs Contax's margins on the 35-70/3.5. I was mostly thinking of Sony vs Zeiss designers and the requirements Sony would place on the design of such a lens, like AF, OSS, and a size/weight limit.
Thanks pdm,
Agree with carsten here, using alternative lenses for landscape work I do a lot of color correction on the 5DII, auto WB sucks in the field. Using Canon dedicated lenses WB seems o get better. But still love my c/y 35-70.

I dunno... i struggle to get really good greens and earth tones (in less than perfect natural light) from the same set of alts I used on my 5DII. WB is better on the A7R but then I shoot mostly RAW. The shadows and highlights have color casts compared to the mid tones. I long for the great color I used to get from my Kodak slr/c and /n at base or lower ISO.
Greens and earth tones are a big deal for me, living in the Pacific NW. Ditto for the less than perfect natural light The A7r seems to struggle more with producing color in cloudy and shadow light.

Not better colour... maybe better skin tones for some skin...
5DMK2 has a bit better colour, A7R isnt exactly amazing in this. A7 is ok, A7s is actually very nice (pretty similar to D810, maybe too much.. looks like same CFA and even same color profile).
With color profile, 5DMK2 has pretty colors, not 1Ds MK3 league, but then.. very few cameras can do that (A99 with good color profile or A900). And probably old Kodak.
