Why?

As you know we are often interested in the same places. Namibia and the Dead Vlei is on my bucket list for the next years. Therefore I'm very interested in your experience.

Well. My travel companion was not into photography, so it was a give and take vacation. We had agreed on two days in the Sossusvlei area. Day 1 was meant to explore the area. Packed with photo equipment, I made the mistake of climbing one of those big dunes. The temperature was somewhere between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius, and I was half dead when I arrived in Dead Vlei, where I only got 10 minutes to look around. It is a 60-km drive back to base camp, and the companion was getting a bit nervous. I took two pictures just in case; the plan was to return with sunrise the next day. However, on our way back to the camp we got stuck in the sand and spent the night out in the open. The next day we got some assistance and got going again, but back in the camp the park manager got angry and wanted to present us a fine for illegal camping. We didn't wait for it and just left, so there never was a Day 2. I have a few passable dune shots from Day 1, but I can't show them here because they are not alternative.

Thanks Toothwalker. Interesting story. Can I see your non-alternative shots from Namibia somewhere else?

Toothwalker - Brilliant work. Great color of sand.

Ronny - Beautiful capture. Nice sky. By the way, is that an old cruiser or something ? It is a bit funny in a way it almost looks like the white sail boat is pulling the dark rusty steel gun ship of some sort.

Vancouver47 - Nice architecture shots.

Well, I snuck in too "Thunderstorm" is brilliant, probably my favourite, although there are very many great shots. What equipment were you using?

I am a bit surprised that two people pick "Thunderstorm" as their favourite, although I agree that it is not bad.

It was taken with the 'getting a bit old now' 5D2 and the P1.4/50 YC. I would have preferred the tree a bit larger in the frame, but that would have implied walking through a national park with lions on the lurk. I settled for this version.

Your photos are phenomenal, the whole lot of them. That is horrible about not being able to make it back to that location because of one jerk but it appears that you did get at least one good photo of that area.

Out of curiosity, how much gear and what did you pack for your trip there? You clearly had the wide and super-telephoto ends covered just looking at the photos and I would guess some type of portrait lens besides the 50 planar.

Skyapad - Great shots. Amazing lighting on the pier shot.

Ronny - Thanks for the link. Topedo boat turned into a missile boat to a museum. Quite a history. Love the exposure.

Steve Spencer - Great job taking those swan shots with 21 !!

I am wondering how did zeiss manage to have a technically sharp lens at F/1.4 while maintaining very good bokeh? other lenses while they're technically sharp but falls apart on bokeh or vice versa.

Ronny, interesting boat shot with the 21,
Toothwalker, thanks for sharing your pictures, I particularly liked the sand dune photographs, can't pick a favourite, there are so many impressive ones in there. Also like your bird and wildlife shots and of course the portraits.

Steve, nice Swan series, espcially with the 21! The 100 mm shots may be a bit oversaturated? Makes the beaks look a bit unnatural in my eyes.

skyapad, impressive, I like the composition,

akul, nice detail

Ulff, great BW pp
