I have a question? I have a Zeiss ZE 35mm f2 and I love it, but my eyesight is not that good, and I find it difficult to focus unless I am outdoors in the daylight. I am using a Canon 1N (I'm an old timer who prefers film). I also have a Canon 20 D, just for kicks. My question is: Is the viewfinder on a Canon 5D or 5DII that much better (and brighter) that it would make focusing easier?
The full frame cameras have a larger prism and image. So it is easier to focus than 1.3X and especially 1.6X crop formats. I find the focus assist light offered on many Canon models to be another great asset and quite accurate with my ZE lenses.
I recommend looking into the 5D2 (you can also use Live View), or holding on for a while longer for a used one after a 5D3 is released later on. For now, try one out and see if you like it.

Thank you
You could try the Ec-S screen in the 1N. Even though it was introduced for the 1DIIN and later 1D cameras, it will physically fit in the 1N since it is an Ec screen. For fast lenses I found it really helped me see the plane of focus better, however, if it's a matter of screen brightness, the Ec-S may not help because it's actually a bit darker than the stock screen, at least with f/2.8 and slower lenses. I've also found that the Ec-CIV is pretty good (the stock screen in the 1DIII and newer), almost as good as the Ec-S without the light loss in the viewfinder. Also, if used in cameras prior to the 1DIIN, the Ec-S may affect the light meter, except spot meter, which with the 1N might be done off the AF sensor in the sub-mirror housing, rather than in the prism. You could also try to find the Ec-R screen that was standard in the 1N-RS camera, which is supposedly about a stop brighter, but not sure how good the screen's acutance is.

The advantage of the 5DII is that it has live view, which will provide the most accurate manual focusing option.
