Andy, that shot of the horse and girl is simply spectacular! I hope that's printed large and hanging in your home somewhere. Great work.

I think you really need something in the 800mm area for moon shots though.

To be exact, 1200mm on DX is just about right. The moon will fit nicely on your sensor.

Andy

AiS 1200mm/11 and D7000, slightly cropped,
resized to 1920x1200 for those who would like to use it as a screen wallpaper. Merry Christmas

thank you indeed ................. and for my new wallpaper

Longest i can get with my setup is 280 on FX - i could switch to DX but on D700 it is not that great I heard. that would get me to 420 but still far off the mark

Great shot, Andy! I gotta ask, though -- how do you do focus? I was playing around last night with a 600mm VR and a TC-20E III, and even with Live View felt there was too much noise for me to get accurate focus. At f/11 it sure feels to me like the sweet spot is still extremely small!

Dear cputeq and zqfmbg,
thank you for your kind remarks - appreciated.

Focusing is comparatively easy. The horse shot was done with an AFS 400mm lens mounted on a Wimberly head. Just the normal procedure - focus on eye, half-pressed shutter, frame it and press the shutter completely - nothing special.

The moonshot was done with Live view to focus. Focus is easy, getting a sturdy base is the hard part. I used 2 tripods and a heavy blanket to dampen the lens and camera. The D7000 is too light for these long lenses and need this additional dampening. My moon shot was done with 1/40 sec exposure time @ ISO 100 and f11. Impossible to get a sharp image at 1200mm and these settings without dampening.

regards,
Andy

HAHA... ok definitely not as cool as the buck shot you posted, but cows need loving too you know!!

The first plane is a MIG 29... and I dig them too!

Hi.
Not so on the MIG 29. - the aircraft shown is mor likely a MIG 15 or 17 , and a dual ship, two seat trainer- probably from Poland. Hope this helps.

Actually I don't know what I was saying there, but thanks for the correction. Although I believe it IS a Mig 17... at least that's what it was listed as in the airshow program by the owner. Regardless, my brain fart, and thanks for jumping on it.

I count two boundary-layer fences on the wing, vs. three for a MiG 17. See here, for instance.

Shortly thereafter designated the production designation of MiG-17, the improved aircraft featured a number of refinements that included a sweep of forty-five degrees (instead of thirty-five), a new, thinner wing-section (for improved speed) with three airflow fences (versus two on the MiG-15)

The airshow program owner is possibly mistaken (or I'm counting wrong!)

You're more than likely right on the money... and obviously know your MiGs better than I do!

A couple more of the same plane.

DJ,

Your ability to consistently produce a wide variety of solid images is impressive. Seriously, you post images of variable types/locations/styles yet never fail to deliver quality.

Merry Christmas

Marc... Merry Christmas right back at ya. Very kind words. I realize that I have a LOT to learn about the types of photography that don't come as easy for me - used to only shoot sports, but now try to get a little more experience at all different kinds of photography. It's very enjoyable. However, it also points out that I have a LOT to learn away from shooting sports! So having said that, I really appreciate your very kind comments and share admiration for your ability to do just what I'm aiming for. CHEERS!!

Marc
Your picture with the boats approaching the jetty is amazing to say the least.
I am not able to tell where it was taken.
I commercial fished the west coast of the USA for 25 years and have been in such a spot more than once, your photo brings those times back, it definatley puts the fear in you.
I take it you are in the Coast Guard, I have the unmost respect for the coast gaurd men and women that risk thier lives to help others in distress.
Thank you
Dennis
