I'm about to receive a mint looking 1D III with perhaps 10-15K actuations used by the previous owner.
He did not send in the Camera for the fix, because he felt no need for it.
And from seeing his gallery, the AF/Ai Servo looks very good.
The gallery had lots of racing cars and aviation shots.
But, I may want to send it in to Canon just in case.

So, the question is......
If I buy a used 1D MkIII, and want to send in the camera to Canon, NJ for AF/sub mirror fix/Ai servo check ( whatever you call it...

), do they do it for free?

Also, do they charge for the verification of shutter count?
If so, how much?

I couldn't find the topic in the forum search...maybe I missed?

They should take care of it for no charge and no questions asked....this has been my experience with used 1D3's....they won't charge you for shutter count either.

I just sent mine in, the guy told me that they do not charge no matter if i am the original owner or not (i am) they also said something kinda strange, i asked about sending it to NJ, they told me, 2 different employees actually. that all MK III fixes now go to newport news VA. i asked a couple times about it going to NJ and they flat out said no, mk III's go to VA.

yes i did it over the phone. took about 1 day to get the label to print out in my e-mail, i had to pack it. they said to pack between 2-3" of bubble wrap around it. I had about 4. got to them in about 2 days from indiana, they said it should take 5 to 7 working days to do the latest AF adjustment and they would send it back. remember to pull off everything you have on your camera only send the camera and lens cover on.

I just did the same thing. It went pretty much as described. Call 1800OKCanon, they send an email with UPS label. I asked for but did not receive the shutter count.

No ! No way to pay $200 for the shutter count. Looks like the seller didn't want you to check and know the true shutter clicks #, he/she wants to scare you away from it

Paul,

Just drive to the NJ service Center, I-95 S Exit 18A, an easy drive, drop in the camera by person, if the camera was never sent it in for service, or the latest Af Accuracy Calibration was not done, you will be 100% fine for a free service, even all the fixes were done so far, by drop it in personally, I am sure you will be fine, everything should be free for any check up and fix related with AF system,,, and just ask them to get the shutter count, no charge... I have done it many times...

Good luck !

PS: Call them first, with your serial # they will tell you if any AF fixes needed, if needed they will send you a free UPS label via email within 24-48 hrs, you just put a note asking shutter count, all will be free !

i thought there was software that would do the d series shutter count, or am i wrong

not sure if it is accurate and scan with a virus protection program if you decide to try but look at this page with 1dcount software

never mind, i just read the rest of that page, does not work with iii series

Only 1D (reliably) and 1D2 (easily tricked). They removed the feature with the mk3 instead of fixing the trick-ability. The 1Ds3 prototype that I shot with still had it, so it was a last minute change.

Now I'm just getting little nervous about my purchase.
He gave me a tracking number, a UPS label that was printed 2 days ago, but it does not show up in on-line UPS tracking system.
He said he dropped it off this morning...
All I get is "billing information received", which could mean UPS does not have the package yet.
He has a pretty good feedback at POTN, so I paid him with USPS money order as I always do.

I hope it'll turn out okay....

Don't worry about the USPS tracking system...I've sold a few things here a month or so ago, the Lenses/Cameras were delivered and it took a week for USPS to even update that the itens had been in transit, let alone delivered...Congrats on your "New" Camera...

I wouldn't worry too much yet Paul, I've found that UPS tracking isn't near as accurate as it used to be. I also bought a used 1d3 a couple months ago and the seller said he had everything checked over by Canon. I am planning to send it in just to get it checked over at some point.

I think "billing info received" is pretty common in the first several hours after someone drops off a package at UPS. I wouldn't worry just yet, it will likely show up tracking as normal later tonight or tomorrow morning once it gets through the sort facility.

If they are performing the "fix" on your 1DIII (which hopefully works for you) they will take test shots and the # of actuations are documented on the repair report. I've done this with 3 bodies...I even called in a week after one of the repairs and were able to pull up the actuations from the ticket repair number in their system....it's completely free.

So, maybe the seller is getting nervous to expose the true amount of actuations...you will find out.

Finally, the package showed up on ups tracking system.
I'll be getting it on Monday......

I'll definitely bring it over to Canon, NJ.
Do they open on Saturday?

Now I'm being silly....
Asking these questions that I can find out by just calling them.
I guess I'm too excited to find out the package is indeed on it's way.

Is it possible that they NJ receives the repair order, but send the camera to VA to get it fixed?
I'm going to call the Canon on Monday to find out as soon as I receive the camera.

I just dropped mine off for repairs (I pulled my Mark III off the table when I forgot to disconnect the Quantum battery from the flash - The battery was on my belt. ouch!!) They reaglined whatever was out of kilter, cleaned, installed new software, replaced the mirror box and the shutter assy - all for the orig $290 quote - and it took only 3 days. I live only 30 min for the NJ repair center. Their service is the best!

I don't think that is the case. I was told VA no longer does the MK3 upgrades. My focusing issue was handled by Irvine which is the closest to me. The call to Canon get's routed to Cheasapeak, VA.
