Ken, I'm cheating a little bit here. This is definitely not my "best" image in terms of technical achievement (sure could have used a polarizer that day), style, composition or even aesthetics. It is, however, representative of my best "effort" in wildlife photography.
Getting this series of shots required a treck in miserably hot and humid conditions. I got as far into this mosquito infested swamp as I possibly dared, trying to use natural cover as my blind while balancing on a log! I was sure that at any moment I was going to take a plunge, along with my 800mm, into the swampy waters.
While I was happy to get the pictures of this greenie, I realized that for the first time in my wildlife photography experience I was willing to do whatever was required to get the shot, without any thoughts of personal creature comforts. I have stood in bone chilling cold winds before in order to get BE shots, but I was totally prepared for the occassion. This time I was unprepared, uncomfortable and I didn't care. All I cared about was the shot. It was a milestone moment for me in how serious I take this hobby.
For me, this was my very best moment as a "photographer" in 2009 and, hence, I chose this image as representative of that moment. It is my best (effort) of 2009.
Now, I'm ready for 2010.
