is the Contax 1.4/35 and this Rollei 1.4/35 optically the same thing?

+1 great shots, all of them.
I especially like portraits at 35mm. They capture more of the subject, and don't tune out the background as much as a 85/100mm lens. Very inspiring.

Anden, your style is fantastic. To the point of making me believe that your third shot is actually Swedish winter :-)

Cheers! The winter is like this in the south of Sweden. Not a lot of snow but really cold and frozen. Most of the time it is raining sideways though:-)

The optics are more or less the same as I understand it. The Rollei has 3 aperture blades...

Thank you! I do prefer 35 mm for portraits too. Makes the connection to the model more intense.

Great shots Anden.

In 2005 I switched from Nikon to Canon when I discovered I could put this lens on a 5D. The love affair continues.

You made me get one. Thank you!

Anden,

Great shots. I used to have a CY 35/1.4 which amazes at close distance but sucks at infinity. I was not sure and am still not sure if it was due to the adapter ring which did not reach infinity and still hit the mirror box. Do you have any (big-size prefered) infinity landscape shots from this Rollei Distagon? Thanks.

WYAN

One example shot and its 100% crop, without any adjustment.

It's a pity to see people posting guesses about HFT as fact. It is not rebranded T* and it is not the same technology - it is Rollei's own proprietary multicoating technology applied at the Rollei factory. That explains why there are some Schneider lenses (to fit Rollei 6000) with HFT.

Wyan. No problems so far. Have not done a propper test at infinity but will do.

Graham: Thanks for sharing the info on the coating.

I like the 2nd one better as it has more 3-d than the first one and grandpa's face is a little too dark for my tastes and thus my eyes get drawn towards his lighter shirt.Love the look from this lens.

So this particular Zeiss is the Rollei HFT? (are there any other types)? Reason I ask is because I've seen the Rollei Zeiss HFT 1.4/35 go for $400 on ebay (which seems like a steal for the quality of lens ones getting). Is there a Contax version and how do they compare?

One of the first hings I noticed when I got the contax version of this lens was the way it renders warm tones, particularly reds. Those last two shots demonstrate exactly what I'm talking about!

The colour is just so rich, it reminds me of medium format chromes.
Actually, the only other time I've seen that sort of pure, vibrant colour was in a brochure for the pentax 645 AF

I'm thinking about buying a rollei version and using the front element to replace my super-scratched contax one (those scratches are noticeably decreasing contrast in the centre )

Then again, I wonder if it could be possible to put the aperture out of the contax into a rolei and get the best of both worlds!
