Thanks Charles!

Andreas: Nice shots! I really like the forest shots.

I'm very glad you did not. In fact I think that Andreas made a mistake when he sold the Rollei version rather than the Contax one. Of course, it's just a personal preference but I think the Rollei triangles are much cooler than the Contax octagons. I'm not complaining though.

I have by the way of PM:s so far gotten about five or six inquiries from people wanting in turn to buy it from me. I have of course declined.

Here she is anyway:

Don't complain, it's part of the deal.

I had to buy myself an C/Y Distagon 35/1.4 yesterday from a local camera shop...
And if (when) you get tired of that cranky triangle bokeh my hexagon shaped aperture is more than willing to help you out...

Luka! Glad you like the beauty. I only kept the CY because I wanted to be able to use it on my Contax bodies.

Ive also packed off my zf35 but kept the zf28 ...a 35/1.4 if true is like a blessing. If I was to self-combust, be trampled by an elephant or stuck by a meteor then I just dont care if it happens after I get to shoot with it. If it happens before then I suppose some amateur newshound will snap me with his kit AF lens just for the irony.

October ...gee I think I better reconsider skydiving or Fugu(Japanese pufferfish) & chips for dinner.

Well, been looking fot the 35/1.4 pretty long time, and since reading this thread I got even more willing to get one... Especially the Rollei version.

But well, a C/Y version would do as well and yesterday I gave my 28/2 "Hollywood" it's big brother:

Now let's hope for some better weather here so I can try it outside.

Hi!

I, also, just bought a Distagon 35 after reading this thread (we all are cursed!)

I really like the rendering but I'm not sure I got a great copy regarding the sharpness (at infinity at least). I compared it to my Leica 35mm f/2 and my 17-40 Canon, and both are better than the Zeiss. The Leica has better sharpness on the sides and in the corner at f/2, and blow the Zeiss away when closed down.
What do think of your copies' sharpness? I'm not really a pixel peeper but there is an obvious difference with mine.

I also bought Distagon 35mm 1.4 and found it softer than expected. It's definitely softer than Zeiss 35mm f2 ZE that I had. I suspect it's also softer than Leica 35mm which I now have. Yes, I had to pixel peeping (5D Mk2) to tell the difference :-)

Ah, ok - that explains it. I was sort of surprised that you chose to sell the Rollei as it does produce a somewhat more distinct style stopped down due to its three aperture blades.

Congrats!

The C/Y version is very good as well. In fact it has T* coating which is definitely better than the HFT coating of the Rollei when it comes to flare resistance.

Wide open mine is relatively sharp for what it is. It's a bit sharper than a Canon 35L at f/1.4. At f/2 it's definitely softer than my 35/2. At f/2.8 it's significantly sharper than my Canon 16-35. Edge sharpness is weaker than center sharpness - but still better than the 35L and the 16-35. There is noticeable CA - comparable to what you find with the 35/2.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at the infinity performance of the 35/1.4. It's not as good as the 35/2, which in turn is not as good as the 21 Distagon or the 50 or 100 Makro Planar but still, it gives quite a decent performance at infinity when stopped down a bit.

Do you think the "poor" HFT coating is a problem at some situations?

I did not find any situations troublesome with the Rollei. The coatings might be different but both are very good IMO.

I don't know if I would call it poor. I think it is rather good - but there are situations where (modern) T* coating can handle things better:

At f/2 or f/1.4 or something similar:
http://peltarion.eu/img/zeiss/rz35-70.jpg

At f/8 (I had to bump this a couple of stops in post as it was significantly underexposed)
http://peltarion.eu/img/zeiss/rz35-71.jpg

Compared to the 35/2 that has T* coating at f/5.6
http://peltarion.eu/img/zeiss/zeiss35-65.jpg

It's not as simple as that tough. The Z* line of glass has a new version of the T* coating which by all accounts is noticeably better than the Contax era T* coating.

I think that Andreas can answer the question best in terms of Rollei vs C/Y 35/1.4..

Edit: And so he has

That doesn't look that bad... IF you consider that the lens is pretty old.
Pic is good enough, atleast the one at f/8.

I am glad it worked out for you. It looks to be quite the performer, and with someone who can make good use of it.

are you sure that are actually reaching infinity? some adapters are a little too thick and won't quite reach infinity while others may actually be a little too thin so that the infinity stop actually results in focus past infinity.

Hi,

My adapter is indeed too thin, so I manually focused at f/1.4 using live view and then stopped the lens down. But I made some more tests and found out that even though I focus past infinity, the image quality is way better at f/8 or f/11 if I actually focus the lens at the infinity markings, especially in the corners.
I now blame my adapter for the IQ at infinity and ordered another one. (a fotodiox, my Leica Fotodiox adapter is perfect so I decided to go for that one; the cheap one for now on, and maybe the "pro" if the cheap one isn't good enough)

edit: now the lens' sharpness seems closer to the leica

Romain, congratulations on your new lens, though there seems to be something wrong with your results. Two issues come to mind. First, if your camera offers micro-adjust, then do it (BTW, your profile shows Nikon?). Second, beware that Zeiss lenses sometimes go beyond infinty, so you should focus rather than just turn the focusing ring all the way. Either of these sissues could cause your lack of sharpness.
Hope this helps

Romain,

Adapter thickness really matters. My CZ 35/1.4 came with a Fotodiox adapter which was too thick and thus prevented proper infinity focus. I bought a chipped adapter from HappypageHK and it is thinner and works great, achieveing proper infinity focusing now.

As far as comparing sharpness between this lens and others like the Z* 35/2 which I also have, I think this lens is optimized for closer distance shooting and also doesn't hold the sharp level of focus throughout the DOF like the 35/2. With the 35/1.4 I can see the sharpness fading the farther something is away from the plane of focus, much more than the 35/2. If you have a rock or something in the foreground and focus on that with a stopped down aperture you will get that more 3-d pop than the 35/2 whose sharpness is more uniform throughout the DOF.

It is very easy to adjust the focus on these lenses, there isn't a need to buy a new adapter. It will possibly not be correct either. I have three Zeiss to Canon adapters of various qualities, the cheapest being a fotodiox. And, none of them gave me infinity with my 35/1.4. But, I easily adjusted the infinity focus.
My Rollei 35/1.4 has a $15 adapter that was way off, but it is perfect after a quick adjustment.
