i have rarely been accused of moving fast in anything. i don't take the c/y out much though, most of these are old shots i'm just getting around to processing.

i'll work on it. i figure maybe i should start with mountain lions since grizzlies seem to dislike cameras.

Glad to see this message thread brought back to life. It caused me to buy a contax AEG 35/1,4 a while back although I am yet to get any photos uploaded.

I wonder though if anyone with much experience with old lenses can help. I have been offered the chance to buy a copy of the Rollei version of the lens. It's in beautiful condition, almost like new and I tested it on an A7R and it is perfect, very sharp at f/1,4 even at distance, slightly better than my AEG although not much in it.

I shone a light through it to check for fungus etc and while most of the glass looks perfectly fine I saw somewhere near the back though in front of the aperture blades what can be seen in the photo below, all the little dots. Are they bubbles? I have often heard about them with regard to old lenses but assumed they would be just one or two in a lens and more obviously bubbles. Although I only highlighted in red a part of them, they make a complete circle around the edge of the element. I don't think it's haze as the rest of the glass there looks crystal clear and they only seem visible in a ring around the edge but I might be wrong.

But I'm no expert on old lenses and wanted to see if anyone here could shed any light and if it is the start of some problems with the lens. Thanks in advance for any help; if it's no big deal I will get it I think and might hopefully soon contribute some triangular booked shots!

Haha, yes I probably sound quite petty and silly to worry about such a thing, I once remember reading about someone who bought an old lens which had some quite innocuous looking marks near the edge of one element and then in time it got worse and worse and it was the glue holding the elements together or something like that failing so I suppose I am a bit worried before handing over plenty of money. Is it a stupid question, maybe I misunderstand a joke, to ask if such lenses can be taken apart and cleaned etc? I have read that haze etc sometimes can be cleaned by someone who knows what they're doing?

I never used old lenses until I clicked on this thread! I love 35mm 1.4 lenses and have tried the Nikon and Canon versions and the new Z* Zeiss ones... when I saw the photos here I instantly knew I had to get one though, it is the only small format lens I have seen that really gets close to the medium format look that I have found, so I find myself suddenly switching from only ever using the latest gear to old ones and I am very uncertain about it!

I have now been able to try out a few of these lovely old Zeiss 35 lenses and have to report that they are not all the same, I guess because of the age and maybe some have been disassembled or damaged by now, a couple I have seen, both Contax AEG ones, lacked the bite of sharpness when things were further away at f1,4, they behaved at f/1,4 rather like the new Z* 35 1,4 does, almost like they were less corrected with contrast and sharpness not as good as the AEG one I have. Having said that unless you tested them side by side as I did you would probably never notice. I guess such lenses are getting old now.

So I am excited at having found such a sharp copy of the Rollei one, I think I am strange and like the triangular bokeh.

I'm one of the few who have taken apart a Zeiss 35mm, but it wasn't the rollei version! My Rokkor 58 1.2 had a similar issue that I took apart and cleaned. It seemed to be oil or something which had evaporated and condensed on the internal elements. I cleaned it and reasembled and noticed absolutely no difference. Maybe if I'd done some strict before and after tests I could have noticed an improvement but I'd say if it's not actually broken, don't bother! You can always have it cleaned in the future if it gets worse. Just keeps an eye on it and read up a little one element superation so you know what to look out for
