I prefer the regular ones because it's usually easier for lens caps, and they can be cheaper, but I don't want to get one if it will vignette. Odds are a regular one does vignette, but maybe someone knows for certain.

speaking specifically of B+W filters, or maybe Heliopan, UV and CPL.

It uses an 82mm filter thread. For my 21 ZE I purchased a Marumi CP, it is a regular thickness and doesn't vignette. I talked to the company owner who recommended this one. He claims that the Hoyas have simply raised their prices to an unreasonable level.

Thanks. I guess those are quasi slim (5mm), according to their ad. They do take front snap lens caps, though. I'm not sure how thick the old 82E filters were (on used market). I've experimented with other filters over the years, and basically swore to stick with B+W or Heliopan after trying to clean other ones, and the question of the glass quality, but maybe Marumi is good.

I read your 21 ZE comparison (to 24 TS-E) on the other forum. Very nice contribution, thanks.

Just the Canon SLR forum here on FM. You've probably already read his post. It's not so much of a review as a comparison to the 24 TSE, which is a very valuable comparison. The 24 TSE seems more versatile, but the 21 I suspect will have a punch to its microcontrast that no other super wide angle can fully duplicate edge to edge, although that Oly 18mm sure seems quite nice, not to mention the Nikon 14-24. This new Zeiss 21 has the advantage of being auto aperture and native mount over the Nikon and the Oly, which are no small benefits. The 24 TSE is quite tempting, though, I have to say, albeit slightly slower f-stop wise.

Sorry if I disagree, erichard, but I see vignetting in my 21 ZE even without filter at f:2.8, and I am not the only one to say so. So, if that is a problem for you, you should think twice IMHO. From there, I use a Heliopan for this lens, which does not seem to make it worse.

There is vignetting, and then there's vignetting. Yes, I realize there is some fall off at f/2.8, but with a filter or lens shade that is too far out, you get absolute vignetting that you can't correct with Photoshop or Pt Lens. I've checked it before by using Live View on a Leica 28, and a normal 55E B+W polarizer will cut the corners off on Live View. So you can see it before and after in a clear cut manner. I don't mind the normal vignetting, that you are likely alluding to, that much. It's a compromise they made to allow us to use the wider aperture with such good resolution, etc.

I just did not want to lead you to believe stuff which I know not to be true. I agree that this vignetting is not problematic, but loving and recommending this lens is one thing, and claiming that it is flawless is quite another...

I use a slim UV filter, and use the Moose warming CP. That is a thick filter, and I have no vignetting, but I do not shoot at f2.8. I did have some very weird vignetting one time, but found that lens shade was on crooked. It's odd that the shade can be installed in the wrong orientation.

I just did a test with and without the Marumi CP, F2.8 to F8 in 1/3 stops. Shots of sky, aperture prority, so this exaggerates exposure gradients. CP set to minimal effect, shooting away from sun, but its almost noon here, so there is some top/bottom effect of CP. I put the images in the same folder as the Zeiss comparison album.

Of course there is some vignetting at 2.8 which is pretty minimal by F4.0. This is well documented in all of the reviews of the Zeiss 21 f2.8 ZE. However, there is no significant difference in amount of vignetting gradient between the shots with the filter and those without. One could argue that the horizon darkening in the f2.8 with the CP could be from the polarizing effect itself and not vignetting? I don't have a 5mm UV filter to test.
The bottom line is that don't worry about a 5mm filter.

i use a regular thickness 4 stop ND filter with a slim polarizer on the 21 without problems. i don't know if a regular thickness CPL would be enough extra to be visible. i prefer B+W Extra Wide CPL filters on my widest lenses.
