p.3 #1 · Question: Are these pics sharp on 100-400 lens 5d MKII?

Hi Willamette

Thanks for the in depth response. That bird was very far away. I will check for reflection on focus, that is a good idea that I would never have thought of. I was not using Servo mode for focus, just one fixed focus point in the center. I will try and have it fill up the entire focus point. It is possible that it didn't actually do that.

I am also going to make sure I am somewhere around F8 even if I need to bump up ISO to get there.

Thanks!

It depends on the subject. Super teles can take great images at minimum focusing distance, and also great close-ups when used with extension tubes.

1. Stop using IS at higher shutter speeds. What is the point?
2. Try to use double the focal length for your shutter speed when hand-holding. e.g. 400mm at 1/800 sec.
3. Don't be afraid to use higher ISO's to increase f-stop and/or shutter speed.
4. The more you crop, the more degradation of the image.
5. Don't use AI Servo on subjects that are not moving.

The recommendation was just to help aid the AF by avoiding a condition where it's trying to choose one focus plane over another, essentially preventing it from seeing the second option. Moving 50 or 100 feet closer might make the subject large enough in the viewfinder to really lock that AF where you want it. It does become a balancing act between the equipment capabilities and in the case with skittish subjects, the tolerance of your presence.

Tony makes a great point, there is a whole other world of closeup photography available to you with extension tubes and teleconverters on this lens.

The Vole was shot with the 100-400 and 25mm extension tube with IS off, tripod mounted, MLU enabled, and triggered with a remote release. The image is full size, no cropping.

I did notice on my 100-400 lens that vignetting is terrible on this lens. I took a picture of a tile roof and the entire roof tiles all of them had purple lines going across them.

I mean WOW, it was the worst I had ever seen. I forgot about it since I was working on the sharpness issue.

It seems like this 100-400 lens has serious limits and is a very demanding lens.

Putting a 1.4 converter on it and the vignetting is even worse.

I only use 100-400 lenses on FF DSLR bodies (6 bodies and 3 copies of lenses). I don't know what your issue is with vignetting. Light falloff is typical, nothing unusual.

What does vignetting have to do with purple lines

Post an example.

I used the 100-400 on a 5D1 and never had vignetting problems nor purple lines.

p.3 #10 · Question: Are these pics sharp on 100-400 lens 5d MKII?

The critical focus in the first image is on the metal fence. I shoot a lot of birds--and herons have very skinny necks and it is hard to keep the focus point on them. The bird is very small in the frame--and the 5DMKII's af is not known for being the very best.
So the chances of having a very sharp and well focused image of the heron in this situation is iffy.
Just a very tough situation for the camera to render imo.
I have a brand new 100-400 that is tack sharp with all my cameras. I love it.

Example of the vignetting on a 5D2 using the 100-400
