Thang, I heard from the Calif. F&W this morning and here is what they had to say
Lou
Hello Lou. I looked at the partial photo that you submitted. I think that band actually is the federal bird band. I am not aware of Golden eagle banding being done by the State. There are some non profits that work with them but in any case the Federal bird banding lab would have primary responsibility for maintaining the banding records. I doubt that they will be able to provide you with much since not many numbers were showing. You may check their website at:
What kind of bird was the eagle eating? I can see a wing in its talon. Good luck with your search.
Jeff
My reply
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply on the golden. It had a Coot from what I could see from
other photos the photographer got of the entire sequence. He did a great job
in taking it in flight and it is a really good looking bird and I though it
to be a young bird as it did show some white plumage in other photos. I will
pass this on to the photographer in Calif.

PS I think you should submit the same photo to the link mention or I will do it for you if you want but it should go in for a look and you can give a better representation than I can ...Show more →
Lou - thank you so much for your help. Yes, DeeDee did send me an email from Jeff last night. I will follow-up with the link you provided. I didn't know that there are private clubs that do the banding as well.

Hung - thanks man. Was just happened to be at the right place right time. Was at Newport Upper Back Bay earlier in the day and decided to swing by SJWS for a quick check on the CWW and bobcats. Drove up and saw it on top of the pole. Initially, thought it was a Turkey Vulture from the distance. It's a bit bigger/bulkier than the osprey.
Gorgeous Eagle shots! It must've been a thrilling experience to witness this
magestic bird and photograph it.I remember that you had a Golden Eagle over at
El Dorado park in October,2008,and I wonder if this one is the same bird or not.
I can tell that a lot of photogs will flock to find this bird.

Hide
Thanks Hide! I believe the one we had last year was a juvie Bald Eagle. It stayed around for about 3-4 weeks and that was a real treat. Unfortunately, we have not seen it again. It was not banded at the time.

Not much more I can add...clearly a fantastic series, Thang! A treat to look at - congrats and well done!
How close were you to the action?
Jim
Jim - thanks! I was ~ 50-60 feet from the pole. I cropped about 30-35% off of these images. They were taken with the D300 and 600mm for still shots and 70-200 w/ 1.4 TC for flights.

Thang your most welcome and yes there are groups many across the USA from Universities that have these departments but all need a special license to handle the bald and golden eagle. DEDE and I have been chatting on PMs about the bird and I am hoping Jeff will know about the bird.
Lou
Fantastic, Thang! I've NEVER seen a Golden Eagle so Up Close and Personal. And to think it was at SJWS...Looks like you got the SoCal equivalent of ED's juvie Bald Eagle. Hope it decides to put in another appearance or two!
Thang,
How did you manage to get those shots? They are unbelievably great ! I am jealous.... . I saw you carrying a 1D Mark II around with a 300mm f/2.8 plus a TC last week; did you use that setup for those shots?

Joshua
Joshua - no, these were taken with the 600 VR and D300 for static and d300 w/ 70-200 VR w/ TC for in-flight shots.

Thang all are outstanding but to me the last one has something a bit above the others. Take care. Bob
Thanks Bob - glad the bird gave me some in flight photo ops!
