OK Thang I took a better look at it and this looks like a silver band which I would have to say is a Federal Band.If this is the federal band than there should be another on the left leg and in color. From the condition of it I could be wrong about the birds age as the band looks beat up and not like the Federal bands we use here in the US. If there is no other band on the other leg than maybe this bird was banded outside the US. The F&W will know if any birds were banded being you have captured one in flight. Contact them and show what you have so far and they should want to help you as much as they can. Keep trying guy.

Lou - you're amazing!!! I will keep looking for better shots of the bands. These were taken at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, CA on Saturday, Nov 21st. Thanks.
Lou - Looking through over 400 images, I can get 2 numbers out of the right tag. They look like 8 and 6 or 9. I don't think there's any tag on the left leg. Please see below.

Thanks Lou. Hope the images I posted will give us some info about the bird.

Wow - very nice! Didn't think I'd see one of these in Irvine. I need to get out shooting more.
I didn’t expect to see one either. Initially, thought it was a turkey vulture from a distance against the sun in the back drop.

Congratulations on an excellent set & since I don't want to take a chance at seeing a certain shot again- Just know I love the IF shots.

Man, you did good with this series. Look at the size of that crop!
Yep, even with the 600 on the cropped body, I still have to crop a whole bunch. Didn’t want to get too close to spook the bird away.

Thang,
You must of been sitting on the next telephone pole to get those wonderful shots. Very nice job.
Larry
Thanks Larry. The 600 on a cropped body sure helped. I did have to crop quite a bit during PP though.
Thang great for looking over more and getting the one you just posted. I do not see any Acraft bands that match this style on my chart but I will see if I can go further on this info we now have. I may use a few of your photos (if thats OK with you) so could you PM me with your name and a way a State can contact you if I get lucky.

Way to go! Another rare opportunity under your belt.
You got the fly-in shots with prey! That is so cool!
- Ken
Ken - those IF shots at beginning were from the-after-the-meal fly-out. I put a couple up front so people can stop after these shots if they don't want to see the gruesomeness...Wish I was there for the initial catch and the fly-in with prey though!!! Or I could PS them in...
I think I know the Biologist who banded this beautiful creature - one of the last of our Golden Eagles here in Orange County and it was near The Ponds.

I'll send you an e-mail about it.
Cheers,

Thanks DeeDee. Don't have access to email from work but will read it tonight. That would be so cool if the bird was local. Lou is also checking with the F&W as well.
Powerful looking eagle Thang. Congrats on this encounter and the nice array of images you got. Dining on Coot doesn't sound enticing to me but that eagle leaves little behind of that meal
#2,11,12 for me, wonderful sir!

Thanks Gene. Wish I had a bit more courage to get in closer.
Thang, I heard from the Calif. F&W this morning and here is what they had to say
Lou
Hello Lou. I looked at the partial photo that you submitted. I think that band actually is the federal bird band. I am not aware of Golden eagle banding being done by the State. There are some non profits that work with them but in any case the Federal bird banding lab would have primary responsibility for maintaining the banding records. I doubt that they will be able to provide you with much since not many numbers were showing. You may check their website at:
What kind of bird was the eagle eating? I can see a wing in its talon. Good luck with your search.
Jeff
My reply
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply on the golden. It had a Coot from what I could see from
other photos the photographer got of the entire sequence. He did a great job
in taking it in flight and it is a really good looking bird and I though it
to be a young bird as it did show some white plumage in other photos. I will
pass this on to the photographer in Calif.

PS I think you should submit the same photo to the link mention or I will do it for you if you want but it should go in for a look and you can give a better representation than I can
