p.1 #1 · Macro Lens Filter Questions Please Help

I purchased this item...
http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Concepts-Close-Up-Macro-Filter/dp/tech-data/B001AO00C8/ref=de_a_smtd/186-7000670-1893602

I placed it on my 58mm lens canon, sigma etc. and I get nothing but blurry.
What am I doing wrong ?

I have canon 85mm/ Sigma 300mm I just want some basic macro.

Have you tried getting the lens really, really close to the subject?

Better to use an extension tube. On eBay, you can often find a set of the Kenko tubes (3 to a set) for ~$100 from one of the Hong Kong vendors. No loss of image quality with a tube, as it's only full of air - no glass. But, you will lose infinity focus, and have to shoot much closer to your subject.
