Hi,

The idea of a small slave flash in addition to the built in flash/580EX looks very interesting. Anybody tried it with a DSLR? If so, what do you think?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

You're better off with a 420 or 430EX. That unit is made for P&S cameras and uses CR123A batteries.

You want the Canon 270EX, for sure.

I thought about them but they are much bigger and heavier.

I know. So what? All I want is a fill-flash which is as small and as light as possible.

No.
1. It can not act as slave.
2. It is bigger and heavier than the HF-DC1.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

You seem to have already made up your mind, so go ahead and get it. Hope you enjoy GN18 and three power settings.

Why are you so sarcastic? All I want is to get info from actual users. Numbers are one thing but in actual usage some things may be discovered which can not be discovered in any other way. Aside from this, I also explore other possibilities.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

You didn't mention that you were going to use it for macro, that changes everything. It should work perfectly for that, and recycle should be near instant with the distances that you'll be working at. You made it sound like you were going to use it with your 580 for key/fill/rim duties.

Well, apparently my friend has one of these so we played a bit with it.

First pic is built-in flash only. Second pic is HF-DC1 added. As he was close to me (~1.5m) he set the power to minimum and added a diffuser (box of a CF card).

But please ignore Quasimodo. Just concentrate on the different lightings.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

And here's how it looks. It's really quite small. Slightly bigger than two matchboxes together. It's also very light. 65g without battery.

Last pic is with its bracket, attached to a P&S, as god intended it to be used. Obviously, the small size of the bracket makes it absolutely useless for DSLR so I'm thinking about making a DIY a flash bracket. The Novoflex is too pricey.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Well, I don't know if it's of any interest to anybody but me but I thought I'd post my first results with it.

Details: The boys are about 10m away from me. Ceiling is about 3-3.5m high and is white. ISO 800. Manual exposure, f/2.8, 1/125. FEC in the build-in flash is set to minimum (-2) i.e. just to activate the HF-DC1. The HF-DC1 was held at about 45 degrees. All is constant in these pictures. The only thing that changed is the power on the HF-DC1. Minimum on the first shot, medium in the second and high in the third.

Light levels were extremely low. When going to Av (f/2.8) I found that correct exposure is 1sec. (ISO unchanged). If I calculated right that is EV 0!

Please note that these pictures were taken only for testing. The actual pics I took were slightly better.....

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
